Very new to this..help

Hi,im very new to this so im probably gonna sound stupid,finally got broadband,now ive downloaded 2 films,one in mpeg,which i cant get on one disc,how do i split it....
and the other one is an avi.
basically i have no idea what software i need to get these onto discs
please help...............thanx
