I have a bit of trouble frameserving subtitles via Virtualdub to Tmpgenc when the avi is in certain xvid-formats. Tmpgenc won't recognize the vdr-file ( can not open or unsupported)?I've tried to install/uninstall a shitload of xvid-codecs( 2 diff. packs og Nimo-codecs as well) with no success. Anyone with a possible solution to this?![]()

I do have the same problem and donn't know an answer i tried to do so with the *.vdr.avi but tmpgenc does not reconize the file.
It has something to do with the handler instal i think but what i donn't know.
Me too want some help on this isue
Thx -
Have you tried frameserving without the audio - I often find that it is the audio and not the video that Tmpg complains about. So extract the audio from the avi and feed it to Tmpg directly. Give it a try.

Yes I agree with you - thats why I always extract sound from avi no matter what codec it comes with. Unfortunately i doesn't work in this case. Thanx anyway

You can add your subtitles with ffdshow so you don't have to use VirtualDub. Works fine too.

Could you point me in the direction of a guide on how to add subs with ffdshow?
-
I don't know of any guide but it is very easy. (i figured it out myself so it must be easy
)
You must have the latest ffdshow (they released one in the first week of the year - http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow - get the alpha version). After installation run the configuration dialog. Be sure to associate xvid movies with ffdshow. Now scroll down the menu (left) to subtitles and enter the path to the subtitles. You can set font/size/color and position here. Make sure the subtitlebox is checked and close the dialog. Now whenever you play an xvid file the subtiitles will be automatically added by ffdshow. So you can play the file in mediaplayer with subtitles and if you open your xvid file in tmpg the subtitles will be there aswell. It works very well.
Good luck, Jack -
I dont wanna sound like a complete newb, but whats frameserving? When i want to convert Divx to SVCD, I just convert with TMPGEnc, creat cue/bin with VCDEasy and burn with Nero.

Jack_G or WeirdAnimal: Why not post a guide on How to add subtitles using ffdshow in the user guides section ? easier for newbies to find it then. The guide doesn't neeed to be any complex.

Ok Baldrick... I will try and make someting clean and simple with a couple of screenshots tomorrow evening.

@ Kban,
Frameserving is when you use for instance virtualdub to load your movie, add filters like subtitles, resize, deinterlace etc. and then send the movie from this program to another program (for instance tmpg) to encode to an mpg-file. The first program passes the editted/filtered frames to a second application. Virtualdub is often used because it has a lot of nice default-filters and even more that can be found on the internet. I often use it to add subtitles to my movie as I am Dutch and I like my movies subtitled. There are different programs that you can use to frameserve like for instance Flask (or Xmpeg) that can be used to serve DVD/VOB files to an external mpeg encoder.
Hope it makes a little more sense to you now.

So what frameserving does is improve the source video(divx) and not the actual mpeg2?
-
Adding filters in virtualdub can improve the source-file and can thus improve the quality of the resulting mpeg

Here's the information on the Virtualdub website http://www186.pair.com/vdub/docs_frameserver
