  1. I just bought a JVC GR-DVL820U camcorder and it is great so far. I couldn't find any messages that confirmed that this camera allows pass through analog signals, converted in real time, to DV. Well it does and it looks great. I hook this camera to my 1394 card, hook the AV input to my VHS (either S-Video or composite), press play on the VCR and presto. Real time conversion thru the camcorder to the screen into DV format. This camera has great CCD (like 1014 or so) which is higher than the TRV18. Oh well, now I can convert all my old VHS tapes to DVD.

I've got a Sony Digital 8 Handycam DCR-TRV620E PAL camcorder.

This also has 'passthrough' or at least I can play analogue into it and see the video on the pc in real time.

How do you record in real time? or can't you? whenever I have the image on screen and click record the pc controls my camera and presses play,in other words I can only record what i've first recorded onto the camcorders tape.

What software enables you to record live without trying to control the camcorder?

Sorry for hijacking your post, but maybe you know the answer?

Thanks for any help,as this could save alot of time! :P

  3. Does anyone know if there is a list that has known cameras that support the pass thru transcoding? I've got a Sony TRV8 and have not had any luck in being able to do this. My understanding is most older Sony products did support it, but so far this doesn't seem to be the case. What I get, is this. I hook up my analog source, I can see it on the LCD screen, but as soon as I plug in the firewire, I no longer see the analog video, and it states on the LCD screen DV IN. Is there a way to NOT have the camera think that it's getting DV input that resolves this, or is my camera simply not capable of live transcoding? Maybe there should be a list here similar to the DVD Player list where ppl could post their success/failure with different units. (hint) TIA for any info anyone can provide.

  4. Brind,

You must take the tape out of your camcorder in order to avoid this problem.

    Greg,

According to this website, the TRV-8 has a "video in" connector which, for a Sony, means that it likely has a passthrough feature:

Don't forget that you must enable DV out in the camcorder's menu for the passthrough to work. If you live in Europe, you may have to enable the "video in" and "DV in" with a widget or with codes.

What is the state of the camera when you push the record VCR button? Play mode, no tape in?

  7. There is definately a A/V in, but I don't appear to have any menu item to enable DV out. I even stopped at the local electronics store tonite to check some models and did see in the VCR menu an A/V-> DV that can be set to ON/OFF. My camera does not have that selection. This model is about 2 years old, but was one of SONY's higher end consumer models at the time. I looked at that widget link you sent, and it apprears to enable DV in. What are the codes that you speak of.

  8. The TRV8 might not have a pass-through feature. See, for example, this thread:

    http://www.frostbyte.co.uk/archive/forums/camcorder/camcorder1/7592.html

If it does not have pass through, you must first record to a miniDV tape before importing the DV to your computer.

I have no experience with widgets or codes since I live in North America but you may to look at the folllowing links:
