  1. Its like we are back in the 70s/80's and we are still trying to figure out if Beta is better than VHS!!!!!!

I really got a burner, and to tell you the truth i would love to get one that burns DVD-R or DVD-RW. But with all these formats around,
I am afraid that in the future, i will be left cold with a DVD standard that will not be used anymore.

DVD writers are still cheap but I'm not like alot of people who have alot of money. I am looking for something to last me for a long time! (or the lifetime of my current computer LOL!) I want to be sure that the dvd write i buy has a standard thats gonna stick in the future. What do you think? What would be the best DVD writer to get?

  2. I would say that right now the sony dru500a is your best buy, but there are others on this board who would claim otherwise. Anyway, ideally it is supposed to be able to handle DVD -R and RW and DVD +R and +RW. I haven't had any trouble and in fact have been very impressed, but others have had the opposite experience. Personally I love my DRU..

  3. I have the Sony DRU500A and I'm pleased with it(even though it was overpriced).I only burn DVD-R now because it is(in my experience)the most compatible format.

  4. Hello-I have had no problems with my DRU500A. It has burned all DVDs and CDs I've tried. Works with most of the DVD authoring programs, except the Sonic MyDVD(that came with the drive), which I would say is a 100% POS. I bought Ulead MovieFactory2 for $45 online, that jacks the total price, but the RecordNow(with free upgrades), that also came with the drive, is great, and easily offsets the cost of the Ulead software. All firmware upgrades for the Sony have worked flawlessly and improved the performance of the drive.

  6. The DVD-R/RW format will win out for the following reasons:-

    1. DVD-R/RW was released to the public first

    2. DVD-R/RW media is a lot cheaper.

VHS won out over Betamax because VHS was cheaper and was better marketed. We all knew that Beta was better people went for VHS.

I wouldnt worry about the future. As it stands Dvd burners are dropping in price, and their speed is raising. By the time your comfortable with your new burner, there will already be another one out that you want. I have a 104, I used to love it. Now I sit around thinking of ways to get my hands on a 105.

  9. i see more dvd burners outhere in the market.
so they gona have + for the standard.
it's da manufact who decides, cause if they dont make -r burner then there will be no market for -r media.

also my verbatim +r media only cost 2bux/each at Sam Club. Way cheaper than other good brand dvd-R. dvds come with cases too.
i dont think RITEK is good media. i think it's burnable. BAD media wont last.

I thought that the -r's and +r's have the about the same compatibility. Maybe that's changed over the last 6 months or so.

  12. Hello again-I think it's a toss-up right now. I have used Pioneer DVD writers since they first came out a few years ago, having a three year head start has not helped the DVD-R cause because this technology was super expensive and only available to video pros. I have found that DVD+RWs write faster than DVD-RWs, which is big for backups, and DVD-Rs seem best for video. I like hearing about cheap, workable media at retail outlets like Best Buy, because that's where I seem to get most of my discs.
I think the "final" format will be neither + or - , but a combination of features of both.

  13. I think you should worry about how much your DVD cost and how much the drive cost NOW. What really matters is how much the DVD disk cost , can you writer use them and can your standalone DVD player reads them.

I personnaly found cheap 1x no-name DVD-R at 2$ canadien (1.10 US) here in Montreal so I went for a Pioneer A05 Drive. For reference, Verbatim DVD-R or +R cost 8 to 10$ a piece here.

Has long has I can find cheap DVD`s I would be happy.

For data, I used 2x -RW disk. They cost 15$ a piece, but so what? I only need like 2 or 3 of them for backups.
