  1. Do these exist?

I'd like to record from my sattelite box, and all the cards I have seen so far can only handle composite or s-video input.

Are there any cards that will take an RGB signal and preferably record at full resolution without dropping any frames.

    Thanks.

RGB or do you mean Component Video ? anyway sure there many - i have several .. they never drop frames and capture at 24 or 32 bit color uncompressed video w/ Component input and i have a rgbhv input card also for that mater ..

of course what you may not realize is such cards start about $4000 US and go to $20,000+++ plus the cost of the supporting system (scsi or fiberchannel raid)..

  3. No I mean RGB, are there no affordable (<$600) cards that will capture full res from an RGB source without dropping frames (doesnt matter if it saves it compressed or uncompressed)?

    Thanks.

  4. "RGB"- Red , Green, Blue inputs... that sounds just like "Composite" to me...

Does the satalite have three seperate RCA style plugs on it? Perhapse color-coded red, green and blue? Then it's composite.

Otherwise I can't think of what an "RGB" interface plug might look like...except those ones they use on the back of old monitors.

Those composite-in cards must have some amazing quality picture!!
I run my ToshibaSD1800 through composite and that's just on a TV. Imagine that on a Comp!!!!!

there is YPbPr or YCrCb component signals and there is RGB and RGBS and RGBHV signals ... the first three are on three wires but Component and RGB are not the same thing at all ...

    Hi
Why do u want to do this??
Are your captures at present not good enough??
I connect from my satellite box by scart but.....
It is a scart adapter which then converts into composite.
I great good results using this connection.

  7. I've never had a capture card before, but I want to make sure I get the best possible setup as I can't afford to keep buying more kit if I'm not happy with the quality.

My sattelite outputs PAL video through either composite video or RGB (from its euro-scart connector), the difference in image quality between these two connections is very noticable when Im watching TV as composite video is noticably fuzzy with weak colours and RGB which is rock steady with really strong colours. However if you had never seen the RGB image you could probably be forgiven for thinking there was not much wrong with the composite connection...

What I don't understand is why this kit should be so expensive, as far as I can tell there are cheap cards out there that captue s-video at full framerate and full resolution, so why the huge price increase for a cleaner (RGB) connection?

  9. Thanks fozzee,

Can that card capture at full res without dropping frames?

That is really cheap, but I'd be prepared to pay more if I could get a card that accepted an RGB signal...

    I capture at mpeg2 720 x 576 Pal bitrate 8000
    no dropped frames
I then encode to VCD or SVCD using TMPEnc.
I don't do avi capture because my results are good enuff for me.

  11. Cheers fozzee, that sounds pretty good, I guess I could probably afford to get one of those just to see if it is Ok for what I want.
