Hello I'm completely new here in this forum and I'm also new at vcd and stuff like that so I would be grateful if anyone could help me with this problem.
I'm trying to convert an avi-clip to svcd-format with TMPGEnc, and TMPGEnc says it will fit on an 80-minute CD but when I'm gonna start using my burning-software it says the file is to big. What can I reduce to get it smaller? The file is about 46 minutes in TMPGEnc but when I open the file in my burning-software it is 83 minutes.

It'll tell you an incorrect time on the burning software because it's only looking at the file size. Just because the video is 40 minutes doesn't mean that it will say 40 mins on the burner. You also have to take into account the data files that are included in making a VCD. Those also take up more space and looks to the burner like it's more minutes.

TMPG may be telling you that it will fit because it may be incorrectly calculating the bit-rate per minute and coming up with an incorrect guess of what the final file will be. Or it may be assuming it's going to be a certain bitrate and you're making the video with a higher bitrate.
The amount of room that will fit on the disc will also depend on the quality of the sound file. -
Yeah I've thought about the size of the file, it was 685MB. But how many MB
extra does it take to make a VCD?

try to multiplex the mpeg file again.
you can do it by selecting "file", "mpeg tools" "multiplex"
in tmpeg.
then try to burn the mpeg to svcd - you will not get the error again.
the mpeg should fit on one cdr.
i had this problem once and it worked for me.HELL AINT A BAD PLACE TO BE -
I'm sorry but I don't know wich "Type" I should choose in "multiplex":
MPEG-1 System (automatic)
MPEG-1 System (VBR)
MPEG-1 VideoCD
MPEG-1 VideoCD (non-standard)
MPEG-2 Program (VBR)
MPEG-2 Super VideoCD (VBR) -
It doesn't work for me, I've tried MPEG-1 System (VBR), MPEG-2 Program (VBR) and MPEG-2 Super VideoCD (VBR) but neither one of them makes the file smaller. I Have two files and each is 666MB and 12MB (58 seconds) too big.

If you'll forgive the rudeness, have you tried using 80 minutes CDRs?
Odd, though, your file should be at least 60mb bigger than what you have before it won't fit on a VCD... you *have* set your burner prog to VCD rather than plain CDROM, right?-= She sez there's ants in the carpet, dirty little monsters! =-
Back after a long time away, mainly because I now need to start making up vidcapped DVDRs for work and I haven't a clue where to start any more! -
I am using 80 minute CDR's, and I'm using WinOnCD 5 and I'm choosing the "Simple Super VideoCD"-mode (without navigation or images).

This is really wierd, somethings gone wrong somewhere. All I can think of is that TMPGEnc is encoding the SVCD at full rate instead of VBR, so a 46 minute comes out the size of a 92 minute disc. However that doesn't explain how the file is only 680mb in explorer. That should fit easily on any VCD format disc, and certainly on a CDR80 in any file format, except UDF (which will cause VCD headaches anyway).
I can't say I've used WinOnCD, far as I can tell it's related to Nero in some way? (erm, it was mentioned copiously in some UDF utility that came with my copy of burning rom). If you're unlucky it might be related to EasyCD creator or some guff like that. It could be simply looking at the length of your file, and as it's in "Simple SVCD" mode it may be just a little *too* simple and assuming 92 minutes - your file is the equivalent of about 68-70 minutes and so you should have 10 mins left over!
Have a go at getting a trial version of Nero (may not work with SVCD, just xVCD...), or use VCDEasy if you're not afraid of dirty hands, and try again.
In any case try it as VCD as well, make sure that the program works at all. Standard VCD settings should give you a file that's about, well, 460mb long and should fit a 46 minute disc
If THAT won't fit, then you've got some really bad stuff going down!-= She sez there's ants in the carpet, dirty little monsters! =-
