I need some opinions, on what the best low-range VCD, SVCD player I can get is. I just ripped a couple dvd w/ eazyvcd, then burned them (in VCD format) with nero 5.5.10, but they won;t play on a friends' Sony DVP-360 ( I used TDK, Imation, Acer and Memorex 80mins - all to no avail). I read the reviews about it and none are too positive. You all know best, what should I get? Preferrably sub $100. I'm in the states, if that matters.

You should get the APEX-AD 1500. It plays VCD's,XVCD's,SVCD's,XSVCD's,CVD's, MP3's, and everything else. It usually costs $69.99 at CompUSA.
Hope That Helps!!! :P -
Helps a ton, thanks! Could it be something I did wrong in the ripping or burning process that keeps them from playing in the sony?

I bought a CyberHome 500 from Bestbuy for 69 bucks and it had progressive scan. I was 119 -50 instant= 69 or u can get the 420 for 59 bucks. 500 is a better deal, I would pick this one over the Apex 1500 which i also have because it has more features and on screen mp3 music name display. Hopefully Bestbuy still have them at that price goodluck

Be carefull of Apex players, especially the AD-1500. The AD-1500 has many flavors and the latest ones being manufactured do not have VCD and SVCD support. Apex has done this to other models also., so check the description on the box and/or take a test VCD/SVCD to the store with you.

I saw a CD to upgrade the newer apex 1500s' firmware to play VCDs, it this a good option? Still taking suggestions too! Just in the $100 and less range, though!
Thanks again! -
Yeah Mtajr1, I bought a CyberHome 500 for my uncle and tried different types of (S)VCD, including KVCD (which I use the most), standard VCD, standard SVCD, DVD,mp3, etc... it all played. I think it's still on sale for $69 dollars at bestbuy.com, if not you surely can get the 402 model for same price... I don't know about APEX but Cyberhome does play the types I tried...

I have to totally agree with the Cyberhome 500.
Got mine for $60 at Best Buy. There is a lot of flexability there as long as the files are complient. The quality of the output is excellent, plus it supports various audio and video outputs.
There alsi is some firmware out to help with some SVCD issues which was a snap to install.

Daewoo 5700...get one at ebay for $50-$75, plays all bitrates of VCD and SVCD (I can even burn a VOB-720*480-AC3 and all, as SVCD and it will play it)
Plus the unit is easily made region free and macrovision free and has progressive video and digital audio outputs... -
