From my readings of VCDHelp, I would say that you would come out happy with either the Pioneer A05 or Sony DRU500A. They are both in the same price range (although the Pioneer can sometimes be found rebadged & discounted).

I personally bought the Sony DRU500A because I wanted compatibility with both types of DVD media. The Pioneer only does -R media. All of my bulk purchases have been -R media, though, since it is so much less expensive.

  3. Get the VerbaTim DVD+RW, i have it and it can burn at 2.4x and the medias are cheaper than -R media. got verbatim +r disc for 2bucks/each.
easy to install and burns faster. BEATS the SONY!!!

  4. jacknjt: The medias +r are more cheaper that the -r... where?... the -r is the more cheap at the moment... get the pioneer or the sony... the both are 4x dvd writers... and there is a new one... a Teac 4x too... it's a pioneer but with a better compatibility firmware...

  7. I've got the DVR-105 (oem of Pioneer DVR-A05) and I really like it. Got the Cendyne deal at officemax before they ran out

As for media, take a look to the left. I've gotten mine from http://www.allmediaoutlet.com and http://www.rima.com and pay about $0.85/ea for 1x and $1.15/ea for 2x, IIRC. 4x media is coming down in price ($2.30 last time I checked) but still more than I want to spend.

Again there are media and writer reviews to the left.

Riteks are fine media, just slow. No skips near end here after over 50 disk, except on one that I burned at 2x with a hacked firmware, I understand the 4x are excellent.

  10. I'm using the White label gen3 dvd-r with no coaster at the moment (burned more 30)... It cost only 59 pounds... more cheap than a dvd+r.
