I read some reports of slow ripping from commercial DVDs on the Sony DRU-500A - does anyone know the max speed this drive rips at?
Thanks,
Mark.

Takes me the better part of an hour to rip an ENTIRE Matrix R1.

My experience has been like the ohters. Mine seems to max out at 2x and takes 40-50 minutes to rip a full 4.3G/4.7G
My Lite-On 163 rips in half the time. -
I would agree with the 45 minute estimate for a standard DVD...
I have an Athlon 1700 :P -
2X I always recommend to have a dvd just for ripping. Saves wear and tear and is always faster. Artec are cheap and rip well.

The Sony DRU500a is excellent for Burning +/- and CD's. But the read speed of the DVD/CD is decreased to recude the noise. I rip in like 10mins with my AOpen 16x DVD thing

The general consensus is backing up your discs is faster with a DVD-ROM drive - they are fast & way less expensive than burning up the motor on your Sony. Lite On & Aopen drives mentioned above are well regarded and reasonably priced.
But, if you have all the time in the world, go ahead - the Sony is limited to 2x.Panasonic DMR-ES45VS, keep those discs a burnin'
