I just bought a new PC with Windows XP, which required that I threw out my old Iomega Buz capture card (which wasn't supported in XP). So I bought a Pinnacle DC10+ instead. Now, trying to continue editing my old films in Premiere has proven to be quite a nightmare... (By the way, I use Premiere 5.1)

    1. The Motion-JPEG compression codec in Premiere seems to be missing, and I don't know where to find a downloadable one. The thing is, the AVI files I captured with the Buz work well in Windows Media Player. But if I try to drag them into Premiere they won't even open. So it seems I need some codec for Premiere.

    2. I get a veery strange error message when trying to open some of my projects - "not enough file handles to complete this operation". This MAY be related to problem 1, but I don't know. It loads only about 10% of the media files (AVI-, JPG-, WAV-files etc.) to be used in the project, and the result is I get LOTS of big holes in the timeline, cause there are so many imported files "missing" (meaning they ARE there, Premiere just won't load them into the project!). They are there, on the hard disk, where they always have been, Premiere just won't import them all, due to this halt somewhere in the opening process. And I have absolutely no idea why. And none of the AVI files will play within Premiere anyway.

I've been surfing the net, searching for answers, but haven't found a solution to either problem... This is really bugging me off, because the Project file and all files that belong to it (it's a 10 GB project with lots of files) lie in the exact same place as before, since actually I'm using the same hard disk as in my previous PC.

If anybody could give me some advice in this mess, my life would be a lot easier!

  2. Yes - I have the same problem. After I upgraded over to XP my Premiere just stopped seeing the Pinnacle MJPEG codec and stopped opening AVI files made with the Pinnacle card. I read it has something to do with the fact that the Pinnacle codec is not a true "software" codec but rather a shortcut to the hardware codec residing on the card. Something like that, can't really remember the real "scientific" explanation, but the idea is that the combination of XP and Premiere doesn't support this kind of thing. There are two possible solutions: install Windows ME as a second system for Premiere editing (a big headache, but I'm seriously considering doing it). Second: use a third-party "true soft" MGPEG codec, which is not tied to any specific hardware. I tried Morgan NJPEG codec - it works just fine, I still can't capture or output via DC10+ from Premiere, but at least I can edit and playback ready Pinnacle MJPEGs.
