How do I change the aspect ratio for DIVX?

I have a widescreen DIVX file that I want to play out to my TV. When I do this, it appears tall and compressed on the sides. Do I need to convert the file to full screen before playing, or can I add bars to the top and bottom? I want to keep it in DIVX format.
