  1. Hello there!

I have made a couple of dvd-r's now, all thanks to the guides at this lovly place!
but one thing i have problems with still, and its the sound for dvd'r,
im using pcm audio on my dvds! and the file is so large, that it trows away much of the quality of the video.

I cant seem to find any guides or help regarding how to use mpeg-1, mpeg 2 or ac3.

my question is, what is the best audio to use for dvds? what works best?
i tried mpeg-2, but then the dvd didnt work in my standalone, only in my pioneer-a05.

best sounding would be pcm , best sound vs. size would be ac3 ..

best compressed sound quality would be DTS (larger file size though)

btw -- the dvd spec allows for higher than 16bit sample rate ... but im not sure players will work, never tried on dvd's.. though 20bit DTS audio CD's sound awesome ..

  3. Ac3? isnt that only for the best standalones? the expensive ones?

and dts? what program should i use? does that work with standalones?

you see, i cant make any mistakes, to expensive to buy new discs here in norway, so we are gentle with what we got

thanks for the reply by the way!

  4. Every DVD player can play at least 2 channel AC3. As far as home video encoding goes for compatibility and smallest size, AC3 is the way to go.

i guess that means that 87 % of the standalones can play ac3?

now i can add an hour to my dvd , or more quality!

    thanks man!

That would be like saying 87 % of CD players can play CD's.

AC3 is the De-facto audio standard for DVD.

ALL DVD players MUST play ac3 in north america ... in europe they dont have to , but i never heard of one that doesnt and it would be rather stupid for a company to sell one that doesnt ..
