When I am trying to burn DVD-R's and -RW's I am only allowed to write at 1X. Is this normal? The box says that the DVD-R's are up to 4X (I know you would need 4X discs) and the -RW are up to 2X
My +RW disc burns at 2.4X as advertised? Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Standard speed for -R or -RW is 1x. For faster - burning you need media that can be burned at 2x or 4x.

Is there any guideline for what type of media we should be using for what?
ie. my main purpose for buying my DRU500A was to backup/keep a record of various files on my computer (large database files, video clips, mp3z, software files, etc..)
Should I be using DVD-R or DVD+R?
Also if I wanted to backup a movie DVD I bought, would I use DVD-R or DVD+R
I never used CD-RWs in the past, what would I use DVD+/-RWs for? The same as above but for when I want to use the disk again?
Thanks. -
For data backup I dont think it really matters. You'll want to burn multisession so you can add stuff later. For movies though you need to use a media compatable with your stand alone DVD player and will be best served in DAO mode.
Not an expert but this is my take on it so far.
