  2. If you have downloaded the file then the extension will tell you what kind of file it is e.g. .mpg is an MPEG file and .avi is an AVI or DIVX file. A VCD or SVCD can be made from either of these types of file and there are great guides on this site to show you how.

Now the confusing part! A VCD or SVCD is actually a type of MPEG file. I suggest you read the WHAT IS section at the top left of this page to get a better understanding.

    Good luck,

    GGS.

Not really. VCD and SVCD is a CD format. To say that a VCD is a type of MPEG file is like saying that a music CD is a kind of CDDA file.
The most important ingredient in the authoring of a (S)VCD is a certain type of MPEG file is more to the point.
From the (S)VCD player's point of view, there's no MPEG file involved at all, just MPEG encoded video data found at a sequence of sectors on the CD.
To get back on topic: Try GSpot to determine what the file really is, and what codecs is used for it.

    Yes !

    VCD will be Mpeg 1
    SVCD will be Mpeg 2

But its not that simple, the Mpeg 1 would also need to have all the other characteristics required for a compliant VCD as would a Mpeg 2.

For example an Mpeg 1 with 252X288 @25fps CBR 1150, Layer-2 44100Hz 224kbps would in fact be a VCD Mpeg

So you could say a VCD is a type of Mpeg

  5. Yeah, nothing ever is that simple when it comes to these things I've noticed
8 months on and every day I have a new problem to solve! Trouble is it's too interesting to stop (1 divorce coming up!).

    Cheers guys.

some files are a little iffy. once i downloaded an avi. after a while, though, i noticed the extension on it was .mpg. but i knew for a fact that it was an avi file. so don't go strictly by the file extension, but most of the time they're correct.
