Hi folks,
I need help. My old dvd died (sanyo 1500). I want to get a new one that plays svcd (Pal and NTSC) at NTSC tv. The player must be avaiable in north america. It's not that easy...I've heard the new pionneer models have problems (353,354,355) like squashing the image.

Can you give me any suggetion?
My best wishes,
A. jr.

there are many listed in the player section ... best way i found is to take a stack of your disks to a large store on a non busy time and pop them into the demo units and see if they will play ...

The only info I can share is on the two SVCD capable units I have purchased - both at BestBuy. The first was a Magnavox. It played vcd & svcd fine, but PAL playback was squished & distorted. I took that back and bought a JVC XV-S300BK. It plays vcd and svcd and PAL looks great.
I have one issue with the JVC - on SOME svcd's, the color red will jump/shake on screen. The brighter the shade of red, the more noticeable the jumping. I posted a thread asking for advice about this, but it didn't get much attention. -
slightly off topic -- but these compatability issues make it a good reason NOT to buy one of those home theatre all in one solutions , plus on some of them you cant add a external dvd player , which makes either upgrading or replacing a worn out unit a costly thing ...

The CyberHome CH-DVD 500 player has been working well so far for me. Picked one up before the Holidays for $70US at Best Buy and have not had issues with it.
Have played PAL & NTSC SVCD and VCD, and NTSC CVD without issue. Also plays DVD +R, +RW

I have Cyberhome CH-DVD500, I have problems with it. SVCD playback is sometimes jerky. If you make your own SVCD what bitrates do you use and with which software.
Thanks, -
Regarding the SVCD playback, most of the content I have was converted using TMPGenc with a constant bitrate of I believe 2520 kbits. Burned using Nero with the SVCD option. These play without issues.
Lately I have been creating CVDs, 352x480 resolution, constant bit rates of either 2200k or 2500k, burned as non-standard SVCD using Nero. I have not noticed any issues with these either. They have a little less quality than the SVCDs, but are easier to archive to DVD+R.
I did do the bios update that is provided at Cyberhome web sight, that may make some difference in the playback since they mentioned addressing some SVCD issues.
Just talked to the guy that sits in the next row over who has the same player, bought the same day as mine, and he says he has noticied some jerkyness in playback, and it is not as good as his pioneer. He has not updated the bios on his machine.
