Really? I tried unchecking that box, but it would not let me create an XVCD with 704x480 rez... I was using 1.1.3, which one works for you?

I really don't like VCDEasy 1.1.3. Did you select VCD 2.0 in VCDEasy. I use VCDEasy 1.1.2. :P

Do you mean when i first start nero and it ask for
    1- create standard compliante CD.
    2- Use CD-i application.
    i should just chek,
    2- Use CD-i application?

He means uncheck "Create standard compliant CD" in Nero when selecting the VCD mode. This will make a XVCD.

    Hope That Helps!!! :P

thanks everybody, I figured out what I was doing wrong with VCDEasy...

Even if I unchecked "compliance" setting, I was getting errors trying to incorp a 704x480 or 720x480 file of either MPEG2 or MPEG1 (xsvcd/XVCD). My problem was that the original format was in NTSCFilm (23.xx fps).

I thought that frame rate should work, but for some reason it did not. Converting to NTSC native fixed my issues.

    thanks again!

  13. Well i got my first xvcd working on my DVD but i got a very small screen like it take all the up side of the screen but no the larger of the 27 inches screen. I will try some other version of setup tonight.
I got a question. What is the best for me? I do my capture in avi format, And with tmpeg when i do my save is it better in mpeg2 or mpeg1 or doesn't it matter beacause i save a vhs copie.

From what I've concluded, the MPEG2 algorithm is better than MPEG1 at any given bitrate. The comparison is akin somewhat to the MP3/MP2 audio comparison. A 224k MP2 file will sound identical (to a mere mortal set of ears) to a 160-192k MP3 file. This is assuming a CD-quality (or better) source WAV file.

MPEG2 for video is supposed to be more efficient and handle fast transitions better than MPEG1. The VBR settings are supposed to be better at a given bitrate also. I've heard that XVCD/MPEG1 compatability is better for the most part with DVD players when compared to XSVCD/MPEG2. Not really a problem unless you have a picky player.

A *VERY* important part of the puzzle is the quality of the input signal. Generally VHS caps are not 'clean' as you would expect a DVD rip to be. The additional noise could skew your results in both directions, depending on your specific settings.

When in doubt I have found that MPEG2, (especially with 2 pass VBR) under TMPGEnc gives slightly better results for my eyes, with my DVD player (Daewoo 5800).

With all of the templates that everybody is creating for both XVCD and XSVCD'z many of my points could be rendered moot due to extreme tweaking.

Try a few 30sec clips using different settings, try them out on your final viewing setup (whether it's a DVD-ROM or a settop DVD player). You may find that MPEG1 gives you better quality for a given source file.

On the whole tho, if you can run with MPEG2, it is the better of the pair.
