  1. My burner is two years old, and I am a heavy user. I was just wondering in your opinion how long should a cd burner last, or is known to last.

    Thanks

i have plextor scsi cd-r 's that are many years old and burned 1000's of cd's and still work fine .. i believe the quality of burns on the various 4x and 8x plextors scsi's were and still are the best avaible for audio cd's, vcd's and svcd but i might be smoking crack and its all in my head..

i think it would depend on the brand and such a lot for max life ..

I had a ricoh that started burning some coasters after about 2 years, but it was a 4x flashed up to 6x so it may have had other issues... I never tried cleaning it or regreasing the rails because by that time I wanted a 16x (and now even 48x are around $50 so unless you're strapped for cash it'll probably last until you want to get a new one).

  6. I gave away a 2x a 4x and a 8x drive, all still work afaik. However, my 24x AOpen died after 2500 CDRs approx. Got it exchanged under warranty. Depends a lot on what writer you buy and how much discs you burn with it...

My old 8x SCSI ( with a 4 MB buffer no less! ) lasted about 1000 CD's. It got erratic towards the end, and wouldn't give me an error, it simple fizzled. It still reads, but can't write. My new 52x24x52 was $49 bucks, so I'm not real interested in teh extended warranty, in 2 more years I'll be buying a 60x48x60x(8x DVD?rw) for $100!
