    If you have a lot of VHS tapes you could purchase a firewire VCR deck such as a JVC HR-DVS2U on ebay for $500-$600, do your transfers, then sell it back on ebay. I did this except I made the mistake of buying my VCR new.

    These decks will generally have a TBC (time based corrector) and other functions that will provide a cleaner capture than using a cheap VCR connected to an analog capture card.
