DVD-R Questions

Hello,

I am really thinking about purchasing a DVD-R drive but want to know if a drive is going to be coming out soon which can record on a dual layer disc. I don't want to buy this dvd drive and in one year learn that it is obsolete.

Does anyone out there know why they just didn't make the current dvd drives able to support dual layer?

there is no such thing as a dual layer disk and there probably won't ever be.

The next big format will be those 100GB disks (http://www.cnet.com/techtrends/0-6014-8-20013825-1.html?tag=ld) or the blue laser DVD's (around 20 - 30 GB per disk I think)

I think DVD-R will be safe for a while yet.

For now, you are better off getting a drive that writes to DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD+RW. For example, the Sony DRU-500A does all of this.

I purchased a Sony DRU-500A last month. The clerk at Bestbuy sent me home with a pack of DVD+R discs. I have sucessfully created 2 DVD+R home movies that run great in my stand alone DVD player.

Should consider buring DVD-R's discs? Is there a difference in writing spee or Price? Any other factors? Seems like most people are talking about the -R format. Just curious.

DVD-R or DVD+R, for now it's a personal choice. Since your DVD writer can write both formats, there is nothing to worry about as long as they play on your stand alone DVD player(s).
You can browse thru the DVD Players on the left here to see how many DVD players support each of those two formats.
As a matter of facts, I just did and here are the numbers
DVD-R: 919 players support it
DVD+R: 511 players support it
The numbers seem quite high, but that's what spit out by the search on this site !!!
