SVCD or MPEG format? I'm about to give up on converting an avi to DVD.

VCD (mpeg-1) and CVD (mpeg-2) video is valid for DVD-video, just make sure tha audio is at 48khz and author as normal.
SVCD is NOT valid for DVD-video but you can 'persaude' some authoring programs to accept it. There is a guide on this in the authoring section.
