all you need to do is play the dvd for a couple of seconds in a software dvd player to unlock the files, or get an aspi adapter

If you haven't tried this already try playing the DVD with your DVD player's media software (PowerDVD or whatever) before using Smartripper. Smartripper needs it to be played first so it can get the copyprotection algorythm from the player. Then it will be able to rip. If it still doesn't work then I don't know.
Good luck -
try either using clad dvd to put it on your drive then try converting or directly convert it with dvdx because I've had that trouble before and those programs normally work for me

i played the movie (the program, ntsc) in powerdvd for a little while and then reopened smartripper and it said a file is still locked. i followed the rest of the directions and selected all the files and hit start and it took me to a progress window. its been awhile and it hasnt made any progress...is that because it is still locked?

Try installing ASPI and it should work
