  1. Hi there,

My name's Rob and I'm the author of Eazy VCD.
As some of you may know I have been planing on surporting output to DVD-R compatable streams for a while now but before I hard code it all in I would like to invite you all for your sugestions on TMPGEnc Encoding settings.

I am very interested in NTSC vs Forced Film and would like to know if many of you use the Forced Film technice with the 3:2 pulldown and if you have had any problems with it and also if you have never used it and if you have had any problems with NTSC source.

    so far, these will be the TMPGEnc settings that will be used;

    VIDEO TAB
    Stream Type = MPEG-2 VIDEO
Size = [720x480 or 720x576 depending on source]
Aspect Ratio = (16:9 or 4:3 depending on source video)
Frame Rate = [29.97fps or 25fps depending on source, note: i am not planing on doing 23.967fps unless it proves to be needed]
Rate control mode = Constant Bitrate (CBR) [i am using CBR to better detect output size]
Bitrate = [automaticly ajusted to give highest bitrate while still fitting on a DVD-R Disc]
    VBV buffer size = 224
Profile & Level = Main Profile & Main Level (MP@ML)
Video Format = [NTSC or PAL depending on source]
    Encode mode = Interlace
    YUV format = 4:2:0
    DC component precision = 9bits
Motion search speed = [user selectable]

    ADVANCED TAB
    Video source type = Interlace
Field order = Bottom filed first (field B)
Source aspect ratio = [4:3 PAL, 4:3 NTSC, 16:9 PAL or 16:9 NTSC depending on source]
Video arrange Method = Full screen (keep aspect ratio)

    GOP STRUCTURE TAB
Number of I pictures in GOP = 1
Number of P pictures in GOP = 5
Number of B pictures in GOP = 2
Output interval of sequence hedder = 1
MAX number of frames in a GOP = 18
Ouput bitstream for edit (Closed GOP) = unticked
    Detect Scene change = ticked
Force picture type setting = unticked

    QUANTIZE MATRIX TAB
    Default Matrix
Output YUV data as a Basic YCbCr not CCIR601 = unticked
Use floating point DCT = ticked
No motion search for still picture part by half pixel = ticked
    Soften Block noise = unticked

The audio will be encoded as AC3 even if the original encoding is different as AC3 is surported in most DVD authoring software.

Please let me know of your thoughts, comments, settings or ideas as i want this to work first time :) *fingers crossed*

  3. Hey Rob,

I've been using your proggie for some months. I really like the SVCD option! The only problem or suggestion I have is...is there a way you can make TMPGenc not automatically pick the B field in the frame order. I have done a bunch of movies lately and they are all A Field. After burning about ten coasters with 3 different movies, (note to newbies-always burn to CD-RW when trying something new! Just bought some 80min ones yesterday) I figured out that the field order needed to be swapped, B to A(another note to newbies-read what others have done, you might learn something )So how I tell is burn a clip on a CDRW and play it in the Mintek, and if there is jitter then I know that the frame needs to be swapped. So then I just stop TMPGenc and open up the batch job and just swap field order from B to A. Start TMPGenc again and all is well.

For awhile I took TMPGenc out of the EAZYVCD folder and just let TMPGenc choose the field order. But then I got lazy of figuring out the times for the amount of CDs and all that, so I figure just let EAZYVCD do all the math for me and just swap field order. Just a minor inconvenience to me thats all.

btw I am using TMPGenc 2.59 Plus if that matters

Another suggestion you may look into, I am going to look into it myself, is playing with the Q matrix. I just found a post today about it by a guy called "mb1." I haven't tried it yet, but I will and let you know within the next few days if it is that much better. (because I didn't find anyone else saying anything about it)

    Here is the original post

Simply edit your matrix f.e. in tmpeg as follows:

    'mb1 interlaced DV':
    Intra
    8,13,13,17,17,21,21,28,
    13,13,17,17,19,21,23,30,
    13,17,19,19,21,23,28,34,
    13,17,19,19,21,23,28,48,
    17,19,19,19,23,28,34,48,
    19,19,23,25,28,32,34,48,
    19,21,23,25,28,32,34,48,
    21,21,25,25,28,32,34,48

    Non Intra
    8,11,11,15,15,17,17,24,
    11,11,15,15,17,17,21,24,
    13,15,15,17,21,21,26,34,
    13,17,15,17,21,21,26,48,
    17,21,21,23,21,30,34,48,
    17,21,21,23,28,30,34,48,
    19,19,25,26,28,30,48,48,
    19,19,25,26,28,30,48,48

With this matrix you get better results on all interlaced material than with mpeg default or tmpeg default matrix.
For interlaced dvd source I recommend to set all 48s to 99 ...

Also interlaced material needs more than 30% higher bitrates than progressive material; so be sure to set your bitrate up.

    regards

    Happy programing Rob

  4. Rob, as a very satisfied user, one thing that would be great would when creating a single CD XVCD, the option to use 2-pass VBR instead of lowering the CBR. Don't know if this is simple to implement, but I've been much happier with the results (albeit longer encoding time) using 2-pass for XVCD (not as CQ, but easier to predict file size). In any case many thanks for a fantastic application - keep it going !

  5. Hi Rob,

I like EazyVCD so much, I've actually sent you money a couple of times. I encourage others to do so, too.

In a future version I'd like to see an option for "chapters," either at a fixed interval or at a fixed interval plus the next scene change. Chapters would allow me to leave a movie and return later without having to start at the beginning and do a fast forward to where I had left off.

    You've got a great program -- thanks.

  6. Thanks for the input guys (and gals), i'll be doing some tests next weekend.

as for the chapters, i have just got chapters working on a test version today :)
So if i get time, i'll post it up on the website next weekend if all is well.

  7. Rob,

While I don't make VCDs anymore, I think your program is one of the best and I eagerly await your entry into the DVD >> DVDR arena !

As for features, I'd like some sort of auto subtitle ripping, and chapter extracting. And, it'd be great it the video stream is ready to be authored NTSC without having to run pulldown on it (or if pulldown is necessary, have it auto-run pulldown).

    Thanks!

  8. Subtitles will ahve to wait a while.
Chapters will be implemented in first DVD-R version
and 3:2 Pulldown will not need to be used
