I'm having nothing but problems trying to burn a movie to DVD. I've tried all kinds of guides and every format from DVD-Video, UDF, ISO, and combo UDF/ISO, and on three different media. No luck. still I only get a "STop" condiftion and disk error on any DVD player.
If I try and play the disk in PowerDVD, I get "Unknow File Format Error"
#89030000. If I open PowerDVD in file mode and just select the main movie VOB,.. it will play just fine. This tells me the media is fine and there is either basic problem with VOB files, or the sofware (Decryptor and IFOedit) are being executed wrong. When I first ripped the file I used "File" mode in Decryptor. After that I've tried just about every trick I've found on this web site using IFOedit. NOthing will give me a clean burn. I'm using Nero 5.5.9.17 and updated to 5.5.10,.. no difference.
I have burn 3 other successful DVD's, but those were movies ripped with Smartripper, or MPEG files created in Ulead videoStudio 6.0.
My question to all that may offer a suggestion is,..... what other things can be done to to make a good VOB file into a DVD?
Also, is there a way to burn a DATA DVD just like a Data CD. I need to get the orginal VOB's off my system to backup Data DVD, so I can erase them and use the space for a "Clean" try at ripping another movie
Thanks in advance.

one question, are you encoding at all or just ripping vob files and then burning them to disk?
one thing i would like to mention is if you had a bad rip you could use dvd2svcd and use their internel ripper to rerip the vobs, you could also use vobedit to rip the video and audio out of those vobs and reauthor the video and audio.
i have had a few bad rips and i use dvd2svcd internel ripper and it packs them back togther the "right" way.
what are the sizes of your vobs? this could tell you if it was a "bad" rip?
also to just let you know, a vob file by itself will work fine in powerdvd but if those vob files as a whole are messed up you resulting dvd will not work properly.
oh yeah, you can also burn the vob files to a dvdrw as data to get them off your hardrive, it won't "mess" them up.
i hope this helps a bit. -
Thanks for the quick response. To answer your question, I'm not doing any mpeg encoding. I really feal the initial MPEG compression done by studios is the best quality, and I'm trying to keep it. The VOB files are all 1GB, as was defined in the settings in Decryptor. I will try the internal ripper in DVD2SVCD and see what that changes in the VOB's. However,
I really believe that the problem is in the formating of the whole set of files
done in IFOedit. If not that then I must have a bad version of Nero, which is making bad DVD's.
In the mean time, I did burn all vob's of the movie to DVD+RW as a physical backup, even though they don't play as a movie. I got a differnet orginal DVD I own and have ripped it in Smartripper and will try burning that to a set of sVCD's. using Sefy Levy's guide. If that works I will try to burn it too a DVD. Rigth now I'm just trying to get some confidence that I have something working right,... i.e. back to basics.
What software do you use for ripping, what do you use for burn."Technology",...It's what keeps us all moving forward. -
I use nero to burn when i author dvd's. i use the dvd-rom method under the compliation box. i have done this over 30 times and all works well in my standalone.
What version if ifoedit do you use? are you just ripping the main movie and then burning those vobs? are you keeping the original bup and ifo files? Are you creating new ifo files in ifoedit? If you are just ripping the movie and not creating new ifo files and bub files through ifoedit then this is where i think your problem lies.
let me know, good luck -
When I rip with Smartripper, and use the settings in the guides, I only get the IFO file, no BUP, and no Video_TS files. When I use Decryptor, I get all the files, but so far I have not had one successful result using DEcryptor. Also, I am using IFOedit 0.95 and have had some luck but mostly problems with the results. IFOedit may be OK but I have no way of knowing since the results have not worked for me. That is why I'm taking a new DVD and trying again. So far I've ripped in Smartripper and got one ifo file and 2 VOB files, and the info file. I tried to burn this directly in Nero but got error message about missing files. I burn it anyway, and it worked OK in PowerDVD(disk mode), but would not load into my APEx 1500 DVD player.
Now I'm going back to IFOedit with the output of smartripper and create the IFO file and the other missing files,... then I will try Nero again using your DVD-ROM setup. Nero has 4 different selections for DVD-ROM, ISO, UDF, Boot, and UDF/ISO. Which one do you use and what about the other selections?"Technology",...It's what keeps us all moving forward. -
udf/iso id the one i use...just click on that and then select new, from there drag just the VIDEO_TS flolder and burn that. works for me everytime.
also if you are just ripping the movie from the dvd then you must use ifoedit and create new ifo and bup files. you could rip these from the dvd so you don't have to create new ones. you must have the bup files to get it to load correctly in the dvd player, i learned this from trial and error.
good luck
test editing -
"Summer..." I've just finished re-doing the entire process with IFOedit creating new IFO, BUP file and then burning with Nero and UDF/ISO. Both failed, but there were no error messages out of nero on the burn. Again, the new disk (DVD+RW) gives "unknown file format" in PowerDVD, but if I select the .ifo and vob as files it will play them without erro.
I've seen on the forum posts about the problems with the new nero release, 5.5.10, so I un-installed nero and went back to my CD rom version which was 5.5.9.8. This version crashed my system trying to erase the DVD+RW. I used EasyCD creatro to erase the disk. Then I looked on the Nero web site for any version between what I have and they are suggesting. Nothing there. So I re-installed 5.5.9.17 and tried to erase and burn one more time. Still the answer is the same,... disk error, unknown file format,... and all my DVD player does is disply "Stop".
I know that the rip in Smartripper is OK, it was nothing but the main movie. Then I used IFOedit to create new IFO's. ONe thing I didn't do was to use IFOedit to GET VTS Sectors. This I will do now. I can't believe the magnitude of time I've wasted trying to burn 1 DVD. I'm on my second week. I must be sooooo close since the movies always play from the vob files, it is just the starting the file that is bad.
One last question,... when you burn in UDF/ISO, and Joliet is not checked, do you all uncheck all other options like file names longer than 8 bits, etc.
I will also try and get some other burning software that can make a DVD.
Hope you have time to reply.... thanks again."Technology",...It's what keeps us all moving forward. -
THIS IS WEIRD, i use nero vs 5.5.9.14 and i leave all the settings as they are on nero under the udf/iso. the only thing i do is hit the label tab and put the name of the movie. are you sure your dvd plays dvdrw?
i could probably be of better help if you instant message me. i am on msn, howru45@hotmail.com and aol, sunmiztres74. add me to your list if you have a instant messeger and i will be able to help you more.
one thing i was wanting to mention is make sure you are using the newest ifoedit. i have vs. 0.94 -
Bstansbury,
I have run into the same thing, and discovered that it's only on my two Apex DVD players that this happens. When I play the same DVD's on my Pioneer DV-250 standalone, they play fine. -
Not in my case. It won't play on my PowerDVD on the PC or on my Sylvania DVD player. The VOB will play as a file in PowerDVD.
It is a good thing that I'm using DVD+RW for all these tests,... I would have made about 30 coasters by now. By the way, I have used Bitsetter on my AOPEN DVD encoder and set the unit to record as a DVD-ROM, so it should look like an orginal DVD. I did this before on one of my DVD+RW disk and it plays on my Sylvania and on a RCA player, as well as my APEX 1500, no problem. I also burnt that disk in Nero and I believe it was version 5.5.9.8, and I did it in DVD-Video mode. The source data was a MPEG movie I created using Ulead VideoStudio 6.0.
What ever has changed on my system is really a puzzle. Can't figure it out. All I can do is keep trying."Technology",...It's what keeps us all moving forward. -
Interesting that you run into this on the other DVD players too. I *think* it's Nero that's causing my problems, but not sure yet. Still many tests to run to know for sure.

Can nero do dvd+r/w discs?
just a question.
r there any posts relating to nero and dvd+r/w.If tomorrow doesn`t exist where shall we all be the day after tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
Ssheepish,...
The answerr is yes,... I have done a Nero burn with DVD+RW. That is the only kind my AOPEn DVD encoder will take. I've also done DVD+R and they have worked fine. The problem is that something in my system has changed and I can't get back to where it works, and it is much worse than looking for a needle in a pile of crap. Let's hope Nero starts to listen to some of the people on this forum and fixes there software."Technology",...It's what keeps us all moving forward.
