Since you're playing SVCD's, your audio is probably MPEG 1 layer II audio, which means you probably have to go to the menu on your DVD player, go to the audio option(s), and select PCM instead of Dolby Digital or DTS. Should have audio after that.

I suspect Dwisniski is right on track. I have both a Philips DVD724 and it's cousin a Magnavox MDV450, and on the both of them, at times I have to change the SPDIF output fom RAW to PCM to get an audio signal through the dolby channels. This is shown on page 38 of the manual. However on my receiver, if I don't make the change I can change the input mode to CD and get an audio signal (I believe I have the L/R separate audio from my DVD player connected to the CD section of my receiver.)

  4. well i'll give this a try tomorrow... i would still like to see some more feed back.

when i try this tomorrow i hope it works...

anyway will i have to change this setting back and forth if i want to watch a svcd or vcd? i mean shouldnt the dvd player auto scence the audio and automaticly make the ajustments? i mean i never had to do such things with my old dvd player... and what is the difference between RAW and PCM? witch is better? and what are the differences between the two?

    thanks,

    slicemaster102, and others:

This may give someone some idea as to how to correct the issue, or unfortunately it could confuse some. As stated before I have a DVD724 and it has the same problem, but not all the time. I use Kwag's SKVCD NTSC film template for a number of things but mostly for XCVDs.

    XCVD
    I use 352 x 480 for my capture resolution
For audio input to the template I use a .wav file I stripped out with VirtualDub

For XCVDs I modify the template by:
Change rate mode control to 2-Pass VBR min 1000, avg 2000 to 2500 and max to 3500 to 4000
Toggle off Inverse Telecine thereby giving it a framerate of 29.97fps
Change motion search precision to High
After encoding is done I do a Simple Multiplex in TMPGenc selecting MPEG-2 Super VideoCD (VBR) and save to a different filename.

When I am done in TMPGenc I burn using VCDEasy in SVCD mode with compliance checks turned off.

The audio works fine in RAW format using the above specified procedures.

Now, if I modify the above procedures to:

Capture in VirtualDub at 720 x 480 resolution
Set the encoding resolution in TMPGenc to 720 x 480 resolution

and change no other settings from the first group of procedures, to create an XSVCD, then the RAW setting on the DVD724 is quiet and I need to switch to PCM to get an audio signal.

I encode all of the above manually I don't use any "front ends', or "scripts".

Could maybe the sampling bitrate or audio frequency be downsizing (probably not the right word) to allow more space for the higher resolution?
