I actually use dvdbackup from linux dvd:create to do this; it just works.

also, i had to make some changes to the source, etc, so I'd have to document that stuff

then there is the whole decss-like code issue. Can't really figure out how to solve that problem, vis-a-vis givin' out binaries...

OK, I posted that comment, and here's how I do it. I rip the DVD to my HD using DVD Backup 1.3. I then look for the main video track (must be <4.4 GB), and make sure it will fit on a DVD-R. If so, you can replace other big .vob files not part of the main video track with dummy files. Up 'till now, I've just made a plain text file with TextEdit containing the word 'null' (optional), and rename it to the names of the extra track files (usually something like VTS_XX_X.VOB) and replace those files in the VIDEO_TS folder with the new text file. Then, burn that folder w/ Toast, and voila, instant backup - extra features.
Note: if you try to rip stuff from that DVD using available DVD Ripping soft, the text files might make those proggies crash. A better solution might be to make a tiny .vob file by muxing a small m2v file and a small ac3 file using ffmpegX's MPEG Tools, and using that instead of dummy text files. This is usually a non-issue, though, as those DVDs you make can be ripped to HD simply by copying the VIDEO_TS folder in the Finder, as they are now unencrypted.
Note 2: Do not click on the DVD menu items for the features that you have removed, as they make DVD Player Quit. I have not seen how they react in standalone DVD players. The main track you left intact will play perfectly everywhere, with the original menus intact.

I'd say, just give away programs that include DeCSS code, so at least you're not making a profit from cracking DVDs, which might be a dangerous position. You could also release the tools anonymously, and ask ppl to mirror them on their sites and idisks. I've got plenty of space on mine if you need a mirror. . . I'm not too worried about getting sued for distribution.

okay i get that you cann replace the vob files with empty text but what if this dvd has 450 vob files. i will never be able to replace 180 of them. cant i just cut them of and put them on another dvd? it would be to time consuming to change all the names plus the text. what do you suggest as an alternate route

Well, you could try throwing out the ones you don't need, or just ripping half the tracks (or about 4.3 GB worth) with OSeX or DVD Extractor, and then using DVD Studio Pro or Sizzle to remaster a working DVD. Are there that many video tracks? or is there a main track, and a bunch of random small useless stuff?

you see its a tutorial called final cut ro 3 by spinworks. i am sure that it has one long video track but it seems to have many chapters. i can get the first part to work by just throwing out VTS_42_0.bup VTS_42_0.ifo, VTS_42_0.vob and then the others like that 43vob, 44vob,ifo,bup. for each number it has a vob, ifo and bup up to 98 of them. plus ofcourse the intial video ts vob,ifo, and bup. i did the first dvd by just removig 42 onwards and the play button works and chapter marks work but the menu starts acting weird. this is okay because i dont really care about the menu part as long as they can see the video. but i need on the 2nd dvd to show chapters 7 through 12 or atleast the video part of it. any clue how i can tell which to keep and which to remove. i am new at this. you say it might have extra stuff but how do i find of which files are extra and which are essential. will dvd extractor tell me or should i look at file size. and then try by trial and error, pick the right files. i guess i was looking for a short cut. didnt want to spend loads of time on this but just make it functional enough because its only a tutuorial dvd for learnning. any help as usual would be appreciated. the entire second disk is 7.7gig. just so you understand.

okay weasel i downloaded the new dvd extractor for osx and it works perfectly. i have made a single file of all the major vobs and imported in dvdsp. all is well there. the only part i am missing are the little video tidbits that come in front of each section but i guess i can live without it. i will remaster in dvd sp. for any of you who are having trouble understand the software. i just clicked on select file in dvd extractor and it gave me a choice of vob files. picked the big ones file size i mean and then checked save m2v video, and save ac3 video and single file. when finished i imported in dvdsp, you can also drag the file if dvdsp can see them with the import function. the audio and video came out perfect. i just wish i could figure out how to get the other video parts in. well this is a work in progress , will let you all know how its going.
