Can anyone comment on their success or failures when burning DVD format mpegs to DVD-R media has been designated as "non-authoring" type? Or when backing-up (ripping/copying) pressed DVDs?
I've been using TDK "general data", non-authoring 2x media and have encountered *no* problems. (I have found that OptoDisk "general media" doesn't play in some set top DVD players.)
Thanks!

Authoring media (sometimes designated DVD-RA) is for special high end burners to master commercial bound DVDs. They play no better than general use media in settop & dvdrom players.
Panasonic DMR-ES45VS, keep those discs a burnin' -
Thats what I came here to find out. I have a TDK indi dvd burner that supports both -r and +r formats. To make back ups of dvd movies, do I buy "authoring" or "general purpose" blank disks?
thanks,

Ok, I have Pioneer A-04 (the oem version...104 sold as a Cendyne Retail box.) and have both Pioneer Retail disk FOR authoring and General. The FOR authoring wont work in the burner! It will not recognize them at all where as the GENERALs work just fine in it and play fine in my Apex AD 1200 standalone. What gives?

most of what you said is true, yet actually, the original 3.95 GB Authoring discs that can be burned in the S-101 and the S-201 ARE more compatible in Players. In fact they are the MOST compatible of ALL types.
Even Player models from '97-'99 that wouldn't read anything else will still usually read those 3.95 discs. That's one reason they are still in production. (Course, I believe they still cost ~$12.00US each)

The Authoring media is for burning in Authoring Burners, the General Media is for burning in General Burners. That's all you have to remember.
Only thing Authoring media can do that General can't is burn CMF-type masters for replication (also don't have pre-embossed copyguard flags).
It's one of those situations where, if you have to ask, you can't afford it.
Authoring type is for serious, high volume, high $$$ corporate/entertainment pros, that intend to replicate.
General is for everyone else.
