I searched the forums but no definitive answer.
Will the Sima CopyMaster allow me to record Macrovision-encoded ("cannot record" message) commercial VHS tapes on my HS2?
Thanks

The short answer is no. The Copymaster will not remove type 2 macrovision, that requires a Sima SCC. You have another problem. DVD standalone recorders also look for the Digital Copy Protection which is different than macrovision and no macrovision eliminnator will get rid of it. The only way I know around Digital Copy Protection is a DVD player with modified firmware to turn it off.

wulf, what is the method for getting or disabling that firmware on the panasonic recprder?to dvd or to dvd

I didn't think any commercial VHS tapes used CGMS, only Macrovision. The first tape I've encountered the "cannot record" message with is a "making of" segment on Disney's Peter Pan.
As far as DVD goes, turning off the MV on my Cyberhome player makes the "cannot record" message go away, so whatever this disables (CGMS, MV), it works with the Panasonic.
The ideal fix would be a hack to the recorder. But I have yet to see anyone acomplish this.
The question still stands: Has anyone tried the $50 Sima Copymaster with a Panasonic recorder?
Thanks -
I just tried the Sima CopyMaster over the weekend and it only removes Type1 Macrovision (rolling/scrolling/flickering) but not the Type2 Macrovision (color stripping).
Apparently newer DVDs using both types so when I taped a DVD, the VCR actually could record the video but the 2 DVDs I tested (Lord of the Rings and Matrix) had random white lines that showed up in the tape.
I ended up returning the CopyMaster as I found that the Canopus ADVC-100, which I already have, can strip out both types of Macrovision and the resulting VCR recording was excellent. I just had never thought of using the ADVC as a video dub device as I had been using it to capture DV/analog video from my camcorder. -
dood, where can i find and recognise this MV? is it a a wire or box
or circuit in the panasonic recorder or any dvd player recorder?
if so how to turn it off?is there any risk to damaging the machine?to dvd or to dvd -

what i did was use a pyle car/home dvd player, they dont have any protection on thier dvd player, so it no macrovision, no copygard just press play and record.
the same should go with heir vcr players allthough i cannot confirm this becuse i have not tried it. -
Simple buy a Sampo 631CF for $129 at frys drop in the simple firmware hack from are450 and walla, record any DVD you want on any of the panasonics.

I have the original Sima and it works only for eliminating VHS copyright protection. There is a new version of the Sima that enables recording of DVD's. I think it's something like $50--cheaper than getting a chipped DVD player. I've seen it marked up to $150 at some places online.. ridiculous.
