It would help if you would let us know the settings you are using.
In my case 1 minute = 100 Mb MJPeg at a resolution of 352 * 288 with 25 fps and a compression ratio of 3.00
If you are capturing at 720 * 576 you might end up with 250 Mb so that would be normal depending on the settings used.
After encoding to MPeg-1 or MPeg-2 you will get much smaller files.

I've a sneaky feeling you aren't actually compressing the video at all... and you certainly aren't using MJPEG as changing the quality setting would certainly have an effect on the file size.

I had a similar issue when I was using Virtual Dub. There are actually two screens where you can set and configure the compression codec and you have to do it in both. It also seemed to deselect back to uncompressed whenever I changed any other settings.

Start from scratch and go through each settings menu, even the ones not in the guide and configure accordingly. Before you capture just recheck the video settings to ensure MJPEG is still selected.

    Good luck with this

When i cahange codec settings i must do it in the normal screen (shift-c) and in the compatability screen(c) i dont know why but it works!
