Okay i've been searching and i've found loads of different drives.
Then I realise some are this -RW and some are this +RW and now my head is beginning to spin!!!!

I've read all the reviews and i'm getting mixed signals wholesale!

What I want is a DVD writer that is about £200 which I think is something like ~$250 US.

I want to backup PS2 games and DVD movies plus put old family videos onto DVD.

The PS2 Games appear to be the governing factor so what is the best drive?? I only need to satisfy the PS2.

I've been looking into the Pioneer A05 which is a -RW whereas i've been looking at others of similer prices with this +RW. would this drive copy games???

Please help as I think my head will fall off soon due to it spinning so much..

Bear in mind i'm from the United Kingdom!!

  2. first of all, have you looked into making "backups" of your dvd's because you can't just make a direct copy like an audio cd. This is because most film dvds nowadays use dvd9 (dual layer dvd's) and you cant record dual layer dvd's on a dvd writer to put it simply. but if u are looking for a dvd writer, i recomend the NEC nd-1100a.

    Thankyou for the reply.

I fully understand about ripping and editing etc,I just wanted to know which would be the best writer to work with the PS2.

I didn't want to spend my hard earned cash on a drive that may not work with the PS2,mainly because of this - and + buisness.

I'll have a look at the NEC drive.. thanks!

  4. At least i'm 100% sure PS2 plays DVD-R! I'm not sure about DVD+R tho, but DVD-R for sure! I remember some1 saying it played both, but haven't got the change to test DVD+R yet. Anyway, if I was you I would buy the Sony DRU500a (at the moment can take sum weeks since they got deliver probs) which burns DVD+R and DVD-R, this is the only one which burns both, which is pretty sweet. Also it burns CD-R's. Read's DVD/CD (this sucks like an ol' ugly whore, it just reads like a dumb blonde)
So if for example DVD+R will be the standard, you can burn, same for DVD-R. Which will keep you safe Except another standard may come out tho, which I personally don't expect 8)

    Cheers OcTroN.

I found that drive today and noticed it could do both plus its had good reviews, since you mentiond I think i'll go for it! :P

LOL@ "it just reads like a dumb blonde"

Is that just in regard to reading normal CD-ROM? because if so it doesn't really matter because my CD-RW drive can read at 48x which isn't too bad.
The DVD Writer will however replace my existing DVD-ROM drive which has a DVD read speed of 16x which is quite abit faster than the SONY.. hopefully it won't make much difference to normal viewing.
I can't keep my existing DVD because my other spare slot in my PC tower is obstructed by a stupid design fault..it would hit my motherboard.

Just a quickie! does the DVD R & RW discs read in most drives unlike the normal CD R & RW did not.
In other words does a RE-writable disc play normally like a write once disc? or would I need to use a write once only for DVD watching?
    Hope that makes sense..

  6. DVD-R is best for PS2 version 1-3, +R for models 5-7.. not sure about version 4. That is what works best for some reason, however it is noted that either format can work on any versions. for all the newest versions +R seems to work better, but -R works fine for sure. For the older models only -R works, however some people have gotten +R to work. You obviously need a Mod-chip to play your backups.
