I have a PS2 as my only DVD player other than what's in my PC.

When I use the PS2 to play DVD movies (which are mostly in widescreen) on my normal 4:3 TV,the TV doesn't play the DVD in 4:3 Letter Box mode like how a television broadcast does (with black bands across the top and bottom).
It seems to squash all of the 16:9 information together making the objects on the DVD fatter.

My TV doesn't have anything I can adjust.
The Playstation2 CAN change its formats depending on the TV connected ie 16:9 widescreen, 4:3 Letter Box and 4:3 Pan Scan but it doesn't make the slightest difference which mode I choose when I want to watch a DVD although the screen changes when I change the settings in the setup, and the settings are saved.

The Playstation2 is a PAL United Kingdom system along with my TV which would be since I live in the UK .

Its not just me having this problem either I have a couple of other friends with similer setups and they have the same problem.

I don't want to buy a widescreen TV because I don't really like them still, plus none i've seen are as big my TV.

Any ideas what I can do to remedy this? is there a hack or something?

Just to note i'm using an AV cable.
I've tried connecting via the rear scart and front AV ports plus i've tried playing through my VCR but the picture is still squashed.

    Any help is much appreciated!

Since i've only been talking to my self I thought i'll answer my own question too!

I've finally found a website that tells me how to do it!

    It reads:

    TV Type Problems

    Q. How do I change the TV TYPE in the dvd player?

    A. Leaving the dvd in the drive Stop the movie playing Press "SELECT" to enter the menu Enter the "SETUP" section Press "X" over the "TV TYPE", this will display a new menu Select new type.

    Q. My TV TYPE seems to be fixed and I can't change it?

    A. You need to make sure that the film is not playing when you enter the "SETUP" menu

I had the second problem, where it seemed as though it couldn't be changed.
It told me to STOP the DVD after it has played and then go to setup!

And the reason why it couldn't change otherwise, or the initial turn on of the system and settings made no difference and the instructions are so sh..?!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Anyway i'm now happier then a pig in sh..!!!! :P :P :P :P
