  1. Hi Guys,

I've always wondered why ripping pressed DVD's is so much faster then ripping DVD-R's?

For eg. If I use DVD Decryptor to rip an original DVD5 it takes about 6-7 mins and I get up to 15,000 KB/s. When I rip the same title that is put on DVD-R I get about 6,000 KB/s max.

Is it the brand of DVD-R's I'm using? I've been using Princo's with no problems...

  3. Pressed DVDs has got better reflecting properties and normally could be read at up to 16X depending on you DVDROM speed. They often can be ripped from 4-12X. Standard 1-2X DVDR and DVDRW have very poor reflecting properties due to their dyes and can be read at max 2X in most DVDROM drives. DVDRW sometimes can only be read at 1X. Ripping from them should be even slower <2X. The newer HSM(high speed media) DVDR's that burns at 4X are better quality and rated to be read at 6X. If you want crucial data to be read at a practical speed, I suggest that you use the newer 4X DVDR's. You can check the speed that your media is read by using Nere's CD speed utility.

  4. lordjarjar,

Thanks for you explanation. I guess that explains it pretty well.

    thingimijig,

If you want to make a copy of a copy.... Unless I missed something you cannot copy directly from DVD to DVD-R or DVD-R to DVD-R without first ripping it to the HD. Whether it's encrypted or not! So there you have it.

  5. If it's not encrypted (what DVD-R is?) you can do a 1:1 copy.

  6. Faceman101,

Hmm.. I thought I tried that with Nero once and it wouldn't allow me to choose my DVDROM as the source and my writer as the destination. I'll try it again and see.. Is this what you used?

  7. Since I do not have NTFS, I copy the files seperately to my HD, then use Nero to burn. If you have NTFS and can make an image over 4gigs, then I am sure you can use Nero to copy and burn. If you have your DVD-ROM and DVD burner on the same IDE cable I doubt it will let you do on the fly.

My friend has a DVD duplicator and once he decrypts the DVD and has a DVD-R of it, he just does a 1:1 for whoever wants a copy.

So my experience is from that.

  9. Once you have made a copy of a DVD-5 with DVDDECRYPTER or sthg, you can then infinitely re-copy the DVD-R on-the-fly using Nero!

    That's what I do!!

PS: DVD player and DVD burner are not on the same IDE cable
I'm using Nero express 5.9.20, an LG 16/48 and an Asus 4x
