  1. I was just wonderin, for any of you out there who download movies, if anyone ever figured out a way to make pal svcd work on the damn pioneer 440 I am so stuck with for a yr +. I dont know and havent tried this but is it the dvd player that isnt playing it or the signal is in pal, as its not converting, and the tv not playing it. Can anyone in a European country maybe add some light if they have this. I was thinking that maybe a pal > ntsc signal converter might possibly do. I dont have one but will buy one should this be the problem.

  2. I have the pioneer 636, which is also unable to play SVCD. This has nothing to do with pal or ntsc, it is just not capable of playing the SVCD format. I had to settle for VCD's, until I bought myself a DVD burner.

  3. I have just looked at the DVD player compatability list and the pioneer 440 should be able to play SVCD's. How are you making the discs, what are you using to encode, author and burn ?

  4. IM burning them as a pal svcd. Um for some stupid reason the pioneer and ht is is all pal svcd's reads the disk, but it has a rolling black and white picture. My wonder since it played the disk, is it the dvd player not converting signal from pal to ntsc or just the make and laser.

  5. The 440 most definitely DOES play SVCD. I have had the same problem in the past with pal encoded mpg2 files giving a black picture. After reencoding with tmpgenc to ntsc they worked fine.

  6. Yea i know you can convert as it does play ntsc svcd.. kinda glitchy for some reason with different bitrates but it plays. Im trying to avoid the hastle of conversion. I didnt know if it was possible to fix ths pal crap by converting signal or if its the laser. Not sure if anyone has a U.S Pioneer and a pal tv to try it on. See if itll play or not.

  7. When you said it would not play, I was assuming you meant that you were getting no picture at all. If you are getting a black and white picture, then this is the sign that it is indeed a PAL-NTSC issue. If you are in europe though isn't your equipment PAL anyway. You can get external converters which should solve the problem.

  8. heheh im busy doing som research so got quick replies. as i see my email gettin hit. To clarify, I am in the united states on an NTSC pioneer 440. I have movies in pal SVCD format. I get a black and white rolling screen when i play them indicating a problem with reading pal. I want to know if a converter from PAL to ntsc put on my dvd player might solve it when trying to play a Pal source on my ntsc as it appears its not play it right by converting signal. I was wondering if any person with the NTSC pioneer had access to a pal television and could try a pal svcd in the dvd player and see if itll work, indicating a converter would solve the problem.
