That is a kernel panic (unix crash). You could spend hours (or days) trying to figure out why it's happening. I would suggest just reinstalling OS X (with the archive and install option if you have 10.2).

  5. Reinstalling may be a little drastic.

It seems from the photograph that there is a Symantec kernel module in the backtrace. So I would make an educated guess and say that some Symantec products causes a kernel panic when you try to delete large files.

I would simply suggest removing Norton or any other Symantec product before doing this, or maybe uninstalling it.

BTW, the terminal is in /Applications/Utilities and is called Terminal.app.
It gives you an Unix shell (command line tool) that is the equivalent of the PC's cmd.exe (or command.exe or DOS mode, whatever).

  7. Tix,

I agree with Iga -- no need to reinstall 10.2 for this problem. It is possibly related to Norton utilities (I've experienced the same kernel panic under the same conditions). I have Norton installed. Although I tend to wonder if QT6 might be a root cause for this problem... (I've noted no trouble deleting these large files prior to opening them in QT).

You cannot force-empty the trash from the terminal (even as the root user). It will result in a kernel panic. At least this is what I have experienced.

One solution that does work (for me) is to boot up in OS9 and then move the large mpeg file(s) to the trash from there -- and then empty it from OS9. This works -- although it isn't exactly a clean solution...

The other option, as Iga suggested, is to blast Norton from your Mac. I have not gone to this extreme.
