  1. As a newbie, I have the Sony 500a and read somewhere that it wasn't good to rip a movie using this drive because it might burn up the motor. Is this true? But this is the only dvdrom I have, so is there a way to prevent damage to the drive, e.g. lower read/write speed setting? Can I rip using a cdrw and copy with dvdrw? Which software should I use to make an exact copy of a movie with the sony 500a? And does it matter which kind of media I copy to, e.g. -r, +r, -rw, +rw?

  2. If you want to backup your movie, light duty use of the SOny itself should be fine. A DVD-ROM drive only costs about $50 but getting another SOny is 7x that so people are cautious.

Read the DVD Rip section at left to learn more about what you want to do.
Panasonic DMR-ES45VS, keep those discs a burnin'

  3. I decided to move my Lite-On 163 DVDROM to my main PC because it rips twice as fast as my DRU 500A. I hadn't heard about ripping being a strain but now I have another reason to be glad I moved it. Cuts +40 minutes offbacking up a DVD using DXC
