  1. I was wondering if anybody was planning on porting or writing Linux versions of the non comercial tools. My last Windows update has made 98SE almost completely unstable. Explorer doesn't work, the peer to peer software won't connect, outlook won't send mail, but netscape still works.
I would like to get rid of this virus known as windows and go completely over to Linux.

I'd wouldn't mind doing it but I the last time I programmed a computer it had 16K RAM, no hard disk, and the program was compiled by hand! (man do I feel old now, vinyl anyone?)

  2. There are some projects going on, but haven't checked the status of them lately. Do a search on VCD on freshmeat.net

    Authoring: VCDImager
    Burning: Several choices
Encoding: That is where the weakness currently is at.
Editing: Not too strong there either.

I am super busy at work and building a new home, so my programming, etc is very, very specific and slow outside of work, so I have never considered trying to break down the current MPEG libraries and look into creating something. I am constantly hoping someone does. I want to get 100% away from this virus known as Windows as well. Let me know if you find anything new out.

  3. To me the one weaknes of linux is the relatively poor
support for mpeg tools, and this is the reason I do more
and more of my work in win2k.

    Here's what I've found:
--bbmpeg has been ported to linux.
--there are the berkley mpeg tools, that suport mpeg1
encoding only (as far as I know) -- vcdimager is available for linux
-- there are numerous cd burner utilities available for linux

FlaskMpeg is not available for linux, but there are
    several all-in-one dvd-to-mpeg4 conversion programs,
and one or two of these will store the vob and ifo
    files to your hard drive.

Lastly (and this one really hurts) tmpg is not available
for linux, and there are no plans to do a port in the
forseeable future (this is stated pretty explicitly
    on the website).

If you need to find these programs, there's a link
in the "Tools" section of vcdhelp, and you can do
serches in freshmeat.net for "mpeg" or "vcd".

If anyone finds any really good linux encoding tools,
please post about them here or e-mail me

really? when did this happen?!? the only thing I know of, was that the bbtools compile under linux... but that's not the encoder/muxer...

well, there are only two burning apps for linux afaik (and I don't see any need for a third one...) cdrecord and cdrdao... both have been ported to win32...

as for the encoding... haven't you heard ever of http://mjpeg.sourceforge.net/ ?!?
