I posted a similar question on the DVD forum, but I think that may not of been the appropriate forum for this question, as this particular site discusses burners and media types. I am just curious how many people have experienced that last chapter freeze or skipping? I had it occur MUCH more with NERO, and when I switched to RECORDNOWMAX, I created backups of all movies that froze in Nero, and fixed them by burning with RECORDNOWMAX. To make a LONG story short, I thought the problem was completely fixed. That was until yesterday, when I backed up Minority Report and saw that as I went through the chapters, chapter 20 completely froze, and it started skipping. I was shocked to say the least because that was the first time that had happened with RECORDNOWMAX. At any rate, I was frustrated, and I am thinking the problem has to do with the DVD+ media. I am using VERBATIM 2.4x DVD+. I never had a problem burning with NERO OR RECORDNOWMAX with ANY (-) media, and up until yesterday, RECORDNOWMAX handled all the (+) disks flawlessly.
I am curious if this is more of an issue with the SONY DRU500A, or the media, or the burning software? It's a weird issue, because it has occured much less with RECORDNOWMAX, then it did with INFERO 5.5.10, so that is a (+) figuratively speaking, lol..but I'm wondering if the (+) format causes this error to be more common. If anyone can post their experiences, and what they have found seemed to cause it, I would appreciate it. ESPECIALLY, if the last chapter freeze occured to people who used burners OTHER THEN The Sony DRU500a. Also, if ANYONE has had the last chapter freeze/skipping issue on ANY (-) media, please post as well. Let's try and figure out what causes this so we can get rid of it permanently.

Last week I experienced the same problem with -R media. I downloaded a copy of MIB II and tried to burn a DVD-R. Both Nero and RecordMax didn't mention any problems with the discs (Bulkpaq and Optodisc). After waiting 1 hour (only 1x media left) both Nero and RecordMax returned an error message. The disc is finalized and my stand alone player does play both the discs but at the last chapter the screen freezes and it’s over.
If I try to write the same ISO to a DVD+RW or a DVD-RW disc Nero and RecordMax are complaining about the disc size.
I think the drive it is reporting wrong sector data to the software so that the software is trying to write past the last sector of a –R disc or the burning software is not yet capable of working with all types of DVD recordable/rewritable media.
DRU500A with firmware 1.0f, Nero 5.5.9.17 and RecordMax DX v4.56 -
@ pncrs, thanks for the reply. I have not really d'l'd any movies and burned them because of the quality. What is odd is that Nero and my Sony Dru500a seem to cause that problem more often. I've gotten rid of bug ridden Nero anyway. RecordNowMax had worked flawlessly, until I backed up Minority Report, then the last chapter froze. Interesting observation you have, but when you say "certain" types of media the error may occur with...I have been using the same Verbatim DVD+R disks, and out of about 10 movies backed up, there have been zero problems with any issue. But with my last backup of minority report, I got the freeze on the same disks which worked perfect with 10 other movies. That is what I don't understand. Hopefully more people will respond and give and share info.

I had the same problem when using Nero. Switched back to RecordNow and problem went away.
Make sure the source disc is clean and not scratched too much. I got an ex-rental copy of Ali for Xmas and had a hell of a time getting a clean rip trying to back it up. Once I got a good though, RecordNow make me a good copy!
Other people here have mentioned labels on DVD's causing issues...._________________
Peka + Drugs = :o -
I had major problems with labels. Here is what happened to me. I burned about 8 or so disks with various recorded movies. I used either Nero or Recordnow DX 4.56 for these burns. They all worked on my standalone player so I said great, time to label them. I labeled each one and later in the week went to check on one of them. It skipped quite a bit, especially in the later chapters. I got suspicious. I checked the others and they all skipped.
I reburned them all with RecondNow and DID NOT add labels. So far I've tested all of them several times and they all are working properly.
In every case the media was ACCU brand. They burn at 2x on my Sony drive.
Take home message... you can't label the ACCU disks. I'm not sure if this i your problem but I just want everyone to be aware. Others have stated they have labeled hundreds of disks with no problem I can say the same for CD burns but since I've only started with DVD burning I can only comment on the ACCU disks. Don't label them. -
thx for the info. I don't put labels on ANY cd's or DVD'S. I use a special cd/dvd marker and write the title. So labels aren't my problem. Anyone else who doesn't use labels notice the last chapter skips/freezes?

Yesterday I tested some discs (Optodisc branded DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW and Bulkpaq branded DVD-R media).
Available capacity;
Optodisc DVD-R 4489 MB
Optodisc DVD-RW 4489 MB
Optodisc DVD+RW 4483 MB
Bulkpaq DVD-R 4489 MB
Image size;
MBII ISO 4489 MB (4.596.992K)
With the DVD+RW I got a message that there is not enough space available on the disc. The software isn’t reporting any problems for the Optodisc DVD-R and DVD-RW disc’s. Nero is writing the discs but at the finalization part of the DVD-R disc Nero reports a media failure, the DVD-RW disc is finalized successfully. The same problem appears when I’m using a Bulkpaq branded DVD-R disc. In simulation mode Nero doesn’t report errors; they only appear at the end of the actual writing session.
The DVD-RW is playing without chapter freeze errors, the DVD-R discs have freeze errors.
Conclusion;
1. My media is faulty (which is very good possible);
2. Nero and RecordMax do have some disc size availability check bugs;
3. The DRU500A is reporting wrong discs characteristics to the burning software;
4. … ?
To Defense;
The Verbatim DVD+R media issue is probably caused by some sort of media fault. Try another disc because it seems that discs from the same batch aren’t always of the same quality. -
@pncrs, using logic, what you are saying just doesn't seem to be correct. When I used INFERO, or as some people call it, NERO, I had a ton of last chapter freezes on movies. When I started using RECORDNOWMAX, it's only happened once in about fifteen rips. If it were solely the media, even if one bad "apple" was in the bunch, why would the last chapter freeze, or end of the disk freeze, more with Nero, then with RecordNowMax. I am starting to think that it may be the Sony Burner. Just about every person that I have heard mention this error has said they have DVD+ disks which it has occured on. I'm going to only get DVD-R's for a little while and see how that plays out.
Has ANYONE had this last chapter or end of the disk ERROR with a BURNER other then the SONY DRU500a???
