I have a recurring problem using the Ulead GoDVD plug-in to create SVCD discs. I am using TMPGEnc to encode my MPEG files, and the plug-in keeps telling me that "Some chapter entry frame numbers exceed the total frames." The file is an SVCD-compatible mpeg2 (480x480) at 23.976fps with 3:2 pulldown on playback. It is CBR 2472 w/audio 128kbps. I used the TMPGEnc GOP settings to manually set I-frames at the chapter points I want. The file works fine with other SVCD programs (CDMotion, VCDImager, Nero, etc.) but not with the Ulead plug-in. In any case, it works up to the point where I tell it to create the SVCD. Anyone have similar experiences?

I have the same problem. Have you worked out a solution ?
thanks

Have you complained to Ulead ?. I did but I haven't received an answer. I mean we paid for working software,. Didn't we ?

The problem is that Ulead expects a properly encoded mpeg file. You should complain to TMPG not Ulead. Even though you may have told TMPG to insert an I frame here or there, it probably didn't include the correct time stamp flag in the GOP.
I haven't had any problems with files encoded by LSX (included with my version MSP), or SVCD's encoded with BBmgeg. Have you ever loaded a SVCD encoded by TMPG into Philips SVCD verifier? This software is available free from Philips. When you do verify TMPG files make sure you check the option that supresses repeat errors, or else your log file will grow by the MB's.
Both BBmpeg, and LSX pass the verifier. Neither BBmpeg or LSX SVCD's have problems with the so called Nero SVCD bug. -
The Ulead DVD-plugin doesn't accept unproperly encoded mpeg files. So I was assuming the my mpeg file is correct.
Besides I have this problem only with larger files, not with small ones. (Check my post about it).
I Have MSP and the LSX encoder does not output good enough quality files.
Do you have the link to download the SVCD verifier, I will sure do that.
I'm not complaning about the new Nero, My post is about the Ulead DVD-plug in which has very nice menus.
Thanks.

Here's the link to Philip's download page, they also have their SVCD tool set, and designer. Beware, as they are very picky, just like MSP. http://www.licensing.philips.com/cdsystems/cdsupervcd.html
The designer is free, but the toolset isn't. The PDF's included are a great source of information.
I understand your frustration with the DVD plugin. I can't count how many hours I've spent encoding mpegs, designing menus and such, just to find out that my TMPG streams weren't compliant with MSP's DVD plugin.
TMPG does produce higher quality, too bad it has a few minor bugs. DVDit, and Spruce won't accept TMPG files either. I guess I could ask for my money back right
Just a thought, have you tried closing all GOP's? This may put the needed flags in place. -
Finally worked like a charm !!!! Thanks disturbed1 !
I closed GOP's like you told me to do, and not only worked but fine, but finding I-frames was a lot faster. Very happy how it turned out to be. I'm sorry I blame on Ulead before since I used their products......Shame on me !! -
DigVid,
Let Ulead encode the video for you. If your using the plugin with Ulead Video Studio you can put all your videos in the storyboard..do your editing the click on "Make a Movie" and it will convert it for you. When that is done you can use the plugin. -

I don't want to sound dumb, but what's a GOP? I am having problems too, my videos only play 1/4 screen size.
-
GOP, Group Of Pictures. A Set of I, P and B frames, used in the compression of the video.
Can you be more specific about your problem ? -

I made a SVCD today & it played full screen, but the menu I made in Ulead DVD Plug-in does not show up.
-
I use the DVD plugin with Ulead MSP 6 and until I got a new version of the MPEG2.DLL file, MSP would see no audio track on my captures from my ATI AIW Radeon. Ulead's tech support sent it to me after I emailed them. Now I can pull my captures directly into MSP 6 and use the DVD plugin to create VCD or SVCD.
-
I use MSP6/DVD Plug-in to create the mpeg from a capture using Virtual Dub and can not add scene frames beyond the first 10 minutes or so of a 60 minute video. I did not use TMPG at all but still have the problem described here... so it can't just be mpegs created by TMPG that are causing DVD Plugin to not work properly. I'm creating VCDs as opposed to SVCDs.
-
This is probably know by all but Ulead has replaced (some time ago) GoDVD with DVD plug-in and the replacement is more than a name chage. Anyone who got has a copy of GoDVD could go back to Ulead and get a copy of DVD plug-in. I have burned svcds using mpg 2 files encoded with TMPGEnc with no problem. I am using the DVD plug-in in VS5.

Pretty certain I am using DVD Plugin and not GO DVD.
Anyone else using MSP 6 and DVD Plugin with Windows ME that is either having or not having this problem?
-
I'm going to try your suggestion, but I have a question. If TMPGEnc doesn't encode properly, and the LSX encoder in MSP is terrible (which it is), then what encoder produces correct files ?
Also, I found that if I took my TMPGEnc-encoded MPEG file and ran it through MPEG Repair, I got a little further. But Ulead claims that the bitrate of the file (in order to be "whitebook" must be 1500kbps. When you use the built-in LSX encoder, they set it to 1123, b/c they claim the end result is a 1500kbps file. So ... do you know how to get TMPGEnc to do this correctly ?
Thanks.

I have run an svcd-compatible mpeg-2 file through Philip's extremely strict file verifier and passed with flying colors. This mpeg file is not recognized by the plugin as being svcd. I think the plugin is a piece of junk. It is very frustration trying to get the thing to work properly. Not only does it not accept many truly compliant files, but it has bugs in the code that seeks I-frame entry points. You can encode your file with specific known I-frames that are also closed GOP's, and they still won't show up in the plugin. Also, they display incorrect timecode, making it difficult to locate the scenes you want. In addition, they claim to support white book vcd-compatible mpeg-1 files, and yet they don't recognize all of the whitebook types. They support 352x240 29.97fps NTSC files and 352x288 25fps PAL files. They do not support the most commonly used whitebook vcd format, 352x240 23.976fps (film). In an email, Tommy from their tech support group told me that they don't support the film-vcd format, and if I wanted to use it I should find another authoring program. In any case, I stuggled with this plugin long enough that I am sick of it and have given up!
