    Hi,

I'm interested in whether DVD writers - the ones that fit inside a PC - will be able to write to DVDs with the storage capacity of DVD-9 and DVD-10 as well as DVD-5 at some point in the *near* future?

I understand that at the moment I can backup my bought movie DVDs that are based on DVD-5 technology using a DVD writer but that any of my movie DVDs that are based on DVD-9/10 technology can not easily be backed up.

In other words does anyone know if DVD writer manufacturers intend to make more advanced writers soon. I guess this also brings up the question of whether the various DVD r/rw+ formats can handle larger sizes that 4.3GB?

    Thanks and regards,

    ..matthew

DVD-10 is just a dual sided DVD-5 disk.. All DVD writers should be able to do these now..

DVD-9 is data that is on 2 different layers, so its unlikely we will ever see a DVD writer capable of this, as writing the second layer would surely FUBAR the first

Does that mean you can backup bought movie DVDs that are either DVD-9 or DVD-10 with blank DVD-10 media in a PC's DVD writer? I thought this was not possible at the moment.

    Thanks and regards,

A DVD-10 is simply 2 DVD-5's stuck together.. nothing more..
The only problem is that if you copy a movie from DVD-9 to DVD-10, is that you have to get up, and flip over the disk

You'll also have to deal with copy protection as most (if not all) commercial DVDs are copy protected.

DVD9s are made in the factory, at current there is no way to burn them, and likely there will not be.

There how however some dual sided DVD-Rs out there, Princo makes some (yuck) and Pioneer does also but they are very expensive.

  8. My understanding is that a DVD-10 is useless because it is essentially two DVD-5 disks glued together. You would have to flip it to use both sides. So you are better off buying two DVD-5 instead given that it is just as easy to change disks than to flip a disk. Furthermore, it is much cheaper to buy 2 DVD-5 disks than to buy a single DVD-10 disk.
