  1. i have a 500MHz AMD with 128Mb RAM, it takes 3 hours to convert a 352 x 288 , 30 min video clip to VCD (PAL) format. If i double the RAM to 256Mb will it be quicker or does it rely more on the speed of the procesor? can anyone help....thanks

  2. In my experience it is direcctly linked to the speed of the processor (time for an upgrade I feel)
    I dunno...it might work

  3. The speed of TMPGENC improves a lot with faster processors, my computer had a HUGE speed improvement when I went from 800mhz AMD to an XP2000 ! (8-10 hrs down to 3-4 hours now)
Also your settings in TMPGENC can influence encoding speed, a standard VCD setting will encode faster than a SVCD setting and ofcourse 2VBR is slower than CBR.

You can sometimes improve speed by playing around with the CPU settings in the Environmental settings. However, you may still find encoding a typical movie to SVCD with 2-pass VBR will take days.

One more reason why some people prefer CCE. 8)
    Or TMPG CQ mode.

  6. I used to have an AMD K6-2 500 and once I upgraded it to a 1600XP processor I got a seven times increase in encoding speed. A 22 minute SVCD encode that did take 7 hours now only takes 1 hour.

  7. I dissagree with you all about processor speed being the main factor, i only have a 700Mhz celeron with 196Mb RAM and it only takes me 2 hours to encode an 480x480@29.97fps MPEG 2 Film.

I Must also add that although the processor does have a lot to do with it, it is not entirely the processor it also depends on your motherboard, amount and speed of RAM.

Not with 2-pass VBR, I'll bet.

  9. Just for comparison, same 1hr mpeg2 dvd file, down to 3000kbs bitrate

    P4 Celeron 1700 512mb ddr - 2.5hrs
    P4 2.4 (533) 512mb ddr - 1.5hrs

So big difference on just a 1 hour re-encode, LOTR would be looking more like 4.5 hrs or 7.5 hrs!!! But at current price, P4 2.4 costs over £100 more!!
