Now I uninstalled the PCI IDE adapter.
Again the writing begins at 4x, but after 30 seconds it decreases to a steady 2x

  2. Do you still have any special driver that should speed-up performance ? Like " The Intel® Application Accelerator" or any packet writing software, such as [DLA], [DirectCD], [B's CLiP] etc ???

  6. Proabbly wont help but here goes.

    1) How many Icons do you have in the icon tray on the right of the task bar. If more than 3 or four drop some.

    2) Do you have a viris program running. Turn off for the test.

    3) Try one of the HD spped test programs. See what is the throuput and dataspikes you get off of that data drive. Check MaximumPC they use to have a shareware test that gave a pritty good graft of what a drive could do.

    4) Defrage or freshly format if you use a partition to hold your data. The one in W98 is better than the defrag in W2k/XP.

    5) Compare system settings between your friend and your computer.

    6) Turn off any screen savers, eye candy.

    7) Long shot but if your running netbueu as one of the LAN com disable it.

8 When you remove stuff do it in savemode.

The only thing is DMA for HD, something running in the background, or hard drive throughput.

Its actually easer to speed up W9x than W2k/XP.

    Good Luck

No, I did get my Sony to work at 4x with the cheep Ritek media. I think the thing to look for is your CPU usage. If it's at 100% when burning, then there must be something wrong. In my case, the Promise Ultra100 IDE adapter likes Harddrives and not cdrom drives. Every burner and cd/dvd drive I but on it acted the same way....it wasn't just the Sony drive. They gave me a new driver but it's working on my onboard so I decided not to mess with it.

Have you tried putting your Sony in your friends computer just to see if it will work at 4x. Then you know at least it's not the drive. If you think this burner is a pain, try getting into some hardware video components. Yikes!

Just to let you all know I received my order from bigpockets.co.uk today: Datawrite DVD-R 4x. Guess what: these discs burned without problems at 4-speed on my SONY!!!
These discs are available both with printed top and white printable top (on the package of the white printables is written: manufactured for datasafe media limited by ritek, so these discs are RITEKs).

    HOLD EVERYTHING: YOURE ALL MISGUIDED!!!!!

NO THE DRIVE CANNOT BURN -R MEDIA at 4x
YES THE DRIVE will burn 4x on +R MEDIA

YOU MUST UPDATE YOUR FIRM WARE to get 4x on the +blanks...

Yes I've used the RITEK4x MEDIA with SONY on the A05 by Pioneer

This is the spec from SONYS WEBSITE:
This new firmware will allow your Dual-+ RW drive to record at 4X on 4X compatible DVD+R media as well as improve the DVD-ROM reading performance with DVD recordable/rewritable media

NOWHERE is it supposed to do the RITEK -R at 4x

I burn this media in my A05 at work 4x
It burns in my A03 after its firmware update at 2x without damaging the drive

Could be, although I have my DRU-500A hooked up to my Promise, and it works great!
(I did have to move it temporarily to another channel to flash it to 1.0f. The previous flash to 1.0d didn't required it to be moved).

4X media has only recently come out, and there aren't a lot of varieties yet.
Someone has burned at 4X on the DRU-500A using Pioneer media.
A future firmware upgrade might help (as 1.0f did with 2X burning).

I've not yet tried 4x media, but I can confirm the problems of attaching a DRU500 to the Promise RAID adapter. Burning was using up 100% of my P4 2.53! Switched it over to the IDE2 and it now uses NOTHING at all.....wierd.

    Rob

  24. Was that one of their regular Raid card or an Ultra. If stock Raid, deffently wont work. Requires two hard drives per cable only. No tape or DC/DVD will work right.

I think it was the regular RAID built into the motherboard.

    Gigabyte 8IEXP:

"Promise PDC20276 RAID controller chip supports RAID 0,1"
"2 x ATA 133/100/66 Bus Master IDE for RAID 0 and RAID 1 ( only two HDDs could be used by RAID function )"
"2 x UDMA ATA 100/66 Bus Master IDE"

    Regards,

    Rob

  26. It better to keep the CD/DVD drive on the conventional IDE as other have found out. They use to put in a message in the instruction of put the non HD on the 1 & 2nd HD IO and your HD on their controller. Esp if you cant switch it off of RAID and into "normal" mode.

    Tnks for the info.

  27. Purchased the printable surface Datawrite DVD-R x4 from www.blankdiscshop.co.uk, they are Ritek Gen 4 media (ADVDinfo).

Nero shows these discs as 4x speed.

I have burnt with DVD Decrypter at 4x no problems (16 min for a full disc)

    They playback fine.

Drive used Sony DRU-500A firmware 1.0f

I've got the same discs but with printed top.
    They are indeed Ritek 4x...
Burned some of them succesfully at 4-speed, but others started to burn at 4-speed and then after 1 or 2 minutes decreased to 2-speed?
I'm using RecordNowMAX, Nero & DVD Decrypter to burn with my DRU500A, fw 1.0f.

  29. I've only tried the one disc so far, I purchased 10 4x speed to test, and as I said DVD Decrypter burnt a full disc is 16 mins at 4x speed.

At the moment it's £9 for 10 2x and £16 for 10 4x, so until the price drops I'll stick to the 2x media.

If I have any problems with the 4x speed media I'll post here.

  30. DVD Decripter got a burn program in it? Hum!
