How do I enable and disable DMA in XP?
My Sony DRU-500a says I have to disable this to install the latest firmware.
Thanks!

You probably have to be logged as administrator (XP Pro) or owner (XP Home) to see that page. Also, make sure you are doing the properties on the Primary IDE or Secondary IDE Channel (not IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers) as donpedro mentioned.

I have realy fun with this one... Who could believe that my Win2000 help will have answer for this.
To change IDE controller settings
Open Device Manager.
Double-click IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, right-click the IDE device for which you want to change advanced settings, and then click Properties.
On the Advanced Settings tab, make the desired changes.
Notes
You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this procedure.
To open Device Manager, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click System. Click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
The Advanced Settings tab may not appear for all IDE controller devices.
Some of the advanced settings for IDE controllers are device dependent. Read the device manufacturer's instruction manual to determine which settings you can change.
You will not be able to change the setting in Device Type if Windows 2000 has already detected an IDE device on an IDE channel. This prevents you from selecting None, which would disable the IDE device. If you want to disable the device, see Related Topics.
If you are not an administrator or a member of the Administrators group, you can use Run as to perform certain administrator functions. For more information on how to use Run as, see Related Topics -

Hello,
This was posted on the Intel website in regards to their application accelerator:
Automatic Selection of Highest DMA Transfer Mode
Intel Application Accelerator automatically enables the highest transfer mode supported by the ATA/ATAPI device and Intel chipset. For example, a CD-RW drive that supports a maximum of UDMA-2 will be set to this mode with no interaction required. Two devices that are on the same ATA channel can even be using different transfer modes.
Is this better than enabling the DMA function?
Thanks
