  1. Hello all,
I'm a bit of a newbie to conversion and such so please help me I don't understand some of the jargon involved with this stuff so please be patient I have 3 avi files I was given, which I believe are DivX (pretty sure). They are in PAL.

The first 2 files have the same problem: when I play them, they have no sound. I did some picking around and found the sound source is a Windows Media Audio file. I must be missing a codec to play the sound on my Windows Media Player, and WMP can't seem to get the right codec. I have DivX 3 and 5's codecs on my computer. My ultimate goal is to convert all 3 to MPEG's with TMPGEnc. The problem is, since the audio source isn't wav, I can't even rip it with VirtualDub. When I try to open these files in VirtualDub, I get this warning:

"Couldn't locate decompressor for format "DX50" (unknown).

VirtualDub requires a "Video For Windows" (VFW) compatible codec to decompress this video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used for Windows Media Player, are not suitable".

It's not a valid format for TMPGEnc to use as the audio source. Is there a way to rip this audio source with another program so I can convert it to wav, so I can plug this into TMPGEnc?

The third file has MP3 as the sound source, but the sound actually plays on WMP, unlike the 2 files. But when I open the AVI with VirtualDub, I get this warning:

"VirtualDub has detected an improper VBR audio encoding in the source AVI file and will rewrite the header with standard CBR values during the process for better compatibility. This may introduce up to 0 ms of skew from the video stream. If this is unacceptable, decompress the *entire* audio stream to an uncompressed WAV file and recompress using a constant bitrate encoder. (bitrate 192.0 + 0.1 kbps)"

I tried the suggestion in the audio section of the FAQ here, but it was unsuccessful. I apologize for the long post, but this is very complicated for me and I don't understand what these warnings mean, what programs I need, nor how to fix the problems. Any help is appreciated with either problem! Thank you!

Download the "Nimo Codec's Package" as it comes with alot of audio and video codecs that can solve your first two problems. You could also download "vdub-mp3-freeze" as it can handle VBR audio without any problems. :P

  3. Thanks for your help! Nimo is a god-send! Now the files at least play with sound! I feel so stupid, I hate being a newbie and not knowing much of what I'm doing!

Well, I'm still working on getting those audio sources ripped so I can make them WAV files to ultimately convert to MPEG-1 for VCD. So far not even the MP3 one was successful. I used VirtualDub's MP3 Freeze for the third file (mp3 audio source). When I hit "save as wav" the usual screen popped up and instead of showing the values (file size, progress, estimated time, etc), they showed zeros and N/A. The final product was a WAV file about 426 KB and it was 2 seconds of audio, which it's supposed to be at least 45 minutes >_<

Any suggestions, anyone? (I'm supremely frustrated!)
