  1. Well, I can say that I think KaiCherry is on the right track (overall)... I would love to see the software have DivX input support for SVCD/CVD though... or I can just stick to ffmpegX and tinker with the denoiser values until my anime fansubs come out just right.

I know that the tools being used on OS X from the Unix community work right, but we are 'mis-using' them like Kai stated.

One tip I can give to those doing DivX->VCD/SVCD/DVD using ffmpegX currently...

    - The 3:2 pulldown of most NTSC clips causes havoc on how one is supposed to configure mpeg2enc, and great care must be taken. I have found that you don't need to manually set the pulldown, and setting the pulldown causes out-of-sync encodes. However, if you have a 23.97 fps (NTSC Film) clip in DivX or .mov, simply DON'T TOUCH the pulldown settings, and leave the output framerate at 29.97 fps. mpeg2enc will set the pulldown flag and ensure everything is set properly.
Slaughtering the competition with amatuer-quality VCD authoring abilities... fear my non-l33t skillz.

again thanks to everyone for the encouraging and kind words.. and i hate to come off sounding like a jerk here, but please dont make me answer this again..the input to the program is from DVD ONLY and that will NOT change.

there will be no vob input, no mpg input no divx input no mov no dv -- and that is the way it is.

  4. When you folks mentioned that MPEG2 encoding would be slow, how slow are we looking at?

So lets say, a 1h 20m movie... approx. how long does the encoding take on your machine?

and what machine is it your testing on?

    Thanks...

i actually have yet to do extensive benchmarking so its difficult to say. One thing is certain - the superdrive slows down the process because it isnt that fast of a dvd reader. I'm workin on a DP 800 with 768 megs of ram, ill give some times when i acurately have them figured out. But i will say one thing, it will be pretty painfully slow for anyone on an old g3 or g4.

  6. Well, painfully slow is better than nothing no?

    I'm running a Dual G4 1GHz, with 512DDR so I'm thinking I'll be alright.

Granted the Pioneer DVD-RW (Superdrive) that's in here will be slow on the ripping process, bah.. no big deal... I get slow ripping as is... a little slower won't bother me.

  7. An update...

first off, if I talked to you online yesterday, you need to find me today to get a build to test

Ok folks...there have been some core changes to improve the speed.

First off, all of the output and processing goes thru the term. The status display gui stuff was just really killing the speed to the point of diminishing returns. it looked really slick, but it had to go.

No, its not a cut/paste thing, so this doesn't get you tweakable options...sorry

Also the terminal stuff is highly threaded, so different code is being composed to allow the users to "bail out" gracefully.

Oh yeah...the app is called "forty-two"

Anyone that is testing it will be posting comments, etc as they run thru it and get results, etc.

I haven't checked any of my pm's yet...please excuse that. Having to rewrite a chunk of this today sorta cut into my time

Actually, since it is going through the terminal, you can just abort the process once it starts in the terminal, hit the up arrow key to show the command that was entered, modify it, and then hit enter. This is exactly what I needed, and I'm happy it turned out this way. Also, in case of error, this allows you to debug the problem, and hopefully fix it.

===>Kai and Bile: OK, I understand that there will be no other source options besides from DVD disc, but how hard would it really be to run the commands on a VIDEO_TS folder on a HD instead, since it is in the same format as a DVD? This would greatly improve the reading speed, and make up for the superdrive's read speed shortcomings. If this is not possible, I guess I'll just have to make an unencrypted disk image of a DVD on my HD, mount it, and use that as a source. DeCSS is unnecessary using this procedure. If there's a will...

I'll look into it, but i do'nt think thats a-gonna work on General Principle because I'm taking to a *device* and not a mount point.

  13. You might like this... Possibly?

If you do, and would like to use it, I'll send you the PSD file so you can convert it to any format you might like.

Possibly even make the ICON out of it.

    *shrug*

    Just a thought...

  15. PRAISE (insert deity of choice here...)!!!!

HUGE strides were made with forty-two with regard to end-user simplicity and installability.

so much so, that everyone may be able to join us in testing as soon as tomorrow evening. We are running this thing thru the ringer again to day, and add "small touches" to make it just that much nicer.

if you got a test version from me yesterday, *please* contact me asap to get this morning's build.

    thx,

    Kai

That' s all. Whew!! I thought it would be something difficult and annoying like maybe being forced to do all my graphics work on a PC for a month. Talk about hell on Earth.

Keep up the good work. Really looking forward to this app.

This program is working great for dvd-9 -> dvd-5 encoding, including subtitles for those foreign flicks. Yes, you will soon be creaming in your cheese when you see how simple it has become. Hip Hip . . .

    Kai,

    I have a few questions for u:

    A) Can you put a thing to type in your desired resolution.
Sometimes(for me) encoding at 512x288 gets HQ video, at minimal sizes.
    B) Does 1 CD setting automatically calculate the bitrate for the movie?

    Thanx

    Q

P.S. the site is almost done, I have to get a few more graphics on.
Do you have the pic of the green guy?

    No. maybe next version.

Sorta. 1CD Divx has become sort of, passe as in all honesty, they look like hell

I didn't concentrate too much effort on them mDVD setting and nDVD setting produce MUCH better results, *orders* of magnitude better, and should fit easily onto 2 CDs
