  1. Ok, i just installed my new dvd r drive. I already had a cd rom and cd rw, so i removed the cd rom and put the new drive in its place. I jumpered the dvd as master but did not alter the jumper setting of the cd rw. The dvd drive has been detected by windows and can be seen as the correct name under device manager. However, start ups are extremely slow as the drive is searched for disks which are not being read anyway. What could I have done wrong so that the drive is detected but media is not? By the way i chose not to connect the cd audio cable but that shouldnt matter should it? Thanks in advance, if you have some sort of messenger leave your screen name i need immediate help.

  2. Read the manual.
It's only 2 or 3 pages that detail the install process.

    2 devices per IDE channel.
    Master and a slave.

These can be jumper selected or cable selected.

Make the new DVD the master on the 2nd channel.
Also, change the jumper on the other device sharing the channel to slave.

  3. No, the audio cable won't matter.

Try disconnecting the CDRW and jumpering the DVD as standalone, usually the same as Master. Could be a compatibility issue.

Was the original CD-ROm jumpered as Master? Cable position is irrelevant unless was special Cable Select cable, which is rare. Jumpering DVD as Master is only correct if replaced drive was also Master.

Some CD drives must be set as the reverse of the desired setting, this is worth a try.

  4. When I installed the drive, I installed it as the manual instructed and got a windows error message saying the drive was not installed correctly, so I switched the jumpers on the back to cable select. Have not had any problems since doing this. I am running Windows XP.

To get my Pioneer 105 working correctly, I had to set it up as master in the second IDE channel.

  8. Cable Select requires a special cable, usually prominently marked, wherein one of the pins is used to designate Master/Slave. Some drives, if set to Cable Select and the cable is a "Normal" cable, will default to Master, or whatever the "No Jumper" setting is.

Position DOES NOT MATTER on a standard cable.
