    Hi All,

I will be capturing footage from several old VHS to burn then in DVD and I want to get good quality without expending a los of space. I know that that DVD MPEG2 offers more resolutions than VHS so I don't see a clear reason to capture them at full dv and burn them as full dvd.

I am planing to capture them at full dv (using my camcorder as a bridge) and then convert them to mpeg2 in 352 x 480 pixels, and then burn them to dvd.

What do you think? Any Ideas?

    Best Regards,

    Jose

  2. Remember MPEG is a compression algorithm -that is why raw video takes up several gigs but your MPEG is usually a fraction of that. You are starting with a source that is low quality to begin with and then applying compression to it. I would capture at the highest rate you can and then try producing short segment with different sttings (480X480 vs 352X240) and see if the results are acceptable. I have made a few video to vcd/svcd conversions and they look like first generation video to video copies. Based on hard drive space and software, and thinking as you did, I captured at 352X288. If youcan capture at a higher rate you may have better luck. Try burnig to a CD-RW if your DVD player will play them:mine will. That way you don't waste a lot of discs. Hope this helps some

    Hi,

After several tests I decided to capture at full dv resolution and then encode it using tmpgenc at 352x480 and it worked perfectly.

    Thanks,

    Jose
