  1. i'm new to making vcd's. I burned a vcd using Nero and I was able to get a 780 meg file onto a regular 700 disc...
also when i put the cd back in the comp...i clicked on properties and it said the cd only used 2mb but the 780mb file was in there!

Are both of these things normal?!

    Thanks for your help

Perfectly. VCD/SVCD are burned in MODE2 format, it scraps error corrections fo extra space available. An 80-min disc, which is only supposed to hold 700MB actually holds 800 MEGS in VCD or SVCD!

And, yes, under properties in Windows, it only lists the right file size if you go under "properties" for AVSEQ01.DAT or whatever (this is the actual movie file).

  3. Depending on the authoring program, the "CD size" that is displayed can either show the entire CD (i.e., 780MB in your case) or just show the size of the first track (which usually will be quite small -- 2MB).

  4. OK thank you for your info. what about videos over 800 meg?
I don't have any yet but how would i get that onto cd?

do they make cds over 80 minute now?

  5. The short answer is that a 74min CDR will hold 74min of MPEG1 standard VCD data, and an 80min CD will hold 80min. This is because the PEG format is in kbits, NOT kbytes.

    1 kbit = 1000bits
    1 kbyte = 1024 bytes

If you're MPEG file is greater than 800MB you'll have to use more than one CDR. OR you could lower the bitrate and make a non-standard VCD called an xVCD. Most DVD players will play xVCDs, but check yours on the list to the left to make sure.
