I've been using panasonic mpeg encoder to convert avi to mpeg1 and for some of the files as the movie progresses the video and audio do not match, at the end of the film there is about a 3 sec delay between audio and video. The other problem that occurs about every five to tebn minutes is that the audio and video pause from 3- 5 sec. No desync. occurs but it drive us crazy trying to watch a flic.

Try to extract the audio with VirtualDub first and use that as audio in the encoder.
For the problems with pausing you could try using another brand of CD-R and burning at a lower speed.
