    Hi
I have recently ripped the movie Erazerhead to svcd using dvd2svcd. For those that dont know the movie its filmed in moody Black & white. My problem is no matter what setting i use i cannot get a decent rip. Every one is far too dark and contrasty, with no detail in the shadows. Could someone with experience of dvd2svcd give me a tip how to get the detail back in the shadows, whether its by judicious tweaking of the settings or with a handy dandy ready made template

come on guys please there must be someone who knows how to fix this with a little judicious Tweaking ?
Or is it one of those unfixable quirks that if it were a microsoft application, would be called a "feature" ??

  5. Hey, i can help. Just set the lum. offset in the dvd2avi-tab to something like 2or3. I read that It's unfortunate top set it higher than 4, cause otherwise it would be to bright. I am using 2. I suggest you should use 3 if the movie is very dark.

    P.S.

The lum. gain is the contrast-setting.

    Edit:

Hope we are talking about the whole progress within encoding. Otherwise you should use an other ripper (like smartripper)

I personally prefer to rip the movie seperately with Smartripper and encode from that, but i doubt that is the problem.

You could try it though, i do it so i can keep messing with it without having to keep getting the DVD out.

The standard DVD2SVCD settings aren't usually too dark, unless there is a problem with DVD2AVI, your best bet is to break the whole process down to find out if the problem is with a certain program.

As for your VBR problem, i havn't checked your other post, but if u have an Athlon processor, CCE crashes when u use VBR, unless u tick the resample audio box in DVD2SVCD.

Hope this helps, im away to work now so i cant help again till tomorrow.

Jonathon Archer: Back when I first started using DVD2SVCD (almost exactly 1 year ago), I, too, couldn't use VBR due to my computer hanging. This was happening to a lot of people but the common denominator couldn't be found and therefore DVD2SVCD's authors couldn't solve it. Athlon processors seemed to be prominent but it didn't affect all Athlon users. This may have been solved since then, but I found 2 suggestions in the forums that kept my computer from hanging and haven't had to revisit the doom9 forums since.

    1) Set "passes" at something less than 3. This was unacceptable (to me) in that the quality wasn't good enough.

2)On the bitrate tab, set the max average to something less than 2000. I used 1950 as I recall. I now have over 200 SVCD's using DVD2SVCD with my Athlon processor.
