I have read excellent thread on converting VHS / Hi8 to DVD which seems to mainly use Vdub and TMPGENC.

My problem is that I do not have a good video capture card - I am using the pass through feature on my Sony DV cam and capturing via Firewire using Pinnacle Studio 8. This creates the raw DV files at approx 13G / hr.

I am in the process of converting some Rugby games (i.e. high motion and apprx 2hrs long) on VHS to DVD and/or VCD. So far I have used the Studo 8 to do all the work - capture, edit and then burn to DVD using the auto setting (2hrs at approx 3150 tranfer rate).

    Questions...
    i) Would I be better using TMPGENC to encode the DVD and then a seperate DVD author software (not interested in menus etc) ?
ii) How does the quality compare ?
iii) How does capturing via firewire compare with using a capture card / V dub set up ? Would I be better getting a new card (ATI AIW ?)

Also, I am planning to put some of the less important tapes onto VCD. How does the firewire / studio 8 setup compare with my old Snazzi MPEG1 capture card ?

    Thanks
    Chris

  2. You can use Studio 8 to create AVI, convert with TMPGEnc and then author back with Studio 8

Thanks for the response - will try your technique.

How do you find the quality of the DVD comparing encoding with Studio and TMPGENC ?

    Thanks

  5. I have used the TMPGENC Encoder and the Studio 8 combo and it works great, but a very time consuming process. I currently use Pinnacle Edition and it's good for everything but a tad bit costly. IF you have Studio 8 you can get the Edition upgrade for like 199.00. But if you are low on funding the TMPGENC and studio work well.
