  1. Im capturing via my Sony DCRTRV320E, using the onboard converter to take an analogue signal in, and capture it as a DV signal.
now I've been editing with premiere 6 for ages, no probs. but now Im trying to convert some old manga on vhs, Im getting stuck with the 4 GB file limit. how can I find my way around this? I've been told to use virtual dub to write segmented files, but virtual dub wont read a DV signal, it just captures nothing. can anyone else recommend a capture utility to get around this limitation?
Id prefer not to have to buy a new capture card, hard-drive or re-format.

  2. There are a few options here:
    1) switch to Windows 2000 (I did this and I am very happy with it), sorry that you do not like this option.
    2) work with video clips less than 18 minutes (this is much more practical IMHO). The only annoying part is you have to rewind the tape a little, then capture another segment
    3) use AV__IO software to capture into segmented files.

  3. I am running Windows2000 with NTFS, so TECHNICALLY I don't have to worry about the 4GB limit, but some softwares still have issues with AVIs larger than 2GB.

I use AVI_IO to capture into 2GB chunks (I'm using a Sony DCR-TRV120), that's a little less than 10 minutes of DV capture (720x480), and save them as uncompressed AVI. From there I pull it into VirtualDub and frameserve to TMPGenc.

VirtualDub can handle Type-2 DV AVIs, but not Type-1. There is a utility (from http:www.PureMotion.com I think) that will convert Type 1 to Type 2 (Edit Studio). You can download the trial version of Edit Studio, and supposedly the convert utility will work when the trial of EditStudio expires). This will allow VirtualDub to open them.

  4. Thanks for your help guys.

I've had a copy of windows 2000 staring at me for ages now, and I think its time to install it.
I tried to use avi_io as well, but again, it didn't give me anything either. it just had that grey screen that Im getting used to seeing.

    thanks

  5. You can use Mainconcept's dv codec to capture dv type 2 using AVI_IO so you have an image in the preview screen. You can use the demo version since you are not compressing the watermark will not appear. VirtualDub will capture DV video ONLY no audio. TMPGEnc will encode dv type 2.
